Had HSG today. Had a good cry today!

After putting if off for months because I was SO sure nothing was wrong with me (I never had any type of problems ovulating, menstruating, no pain, etc.), I finally had the HSG today and got a big shock.

The procedure itself was fine - no pain, just as uncomfortable as a PAP really. But apparently, my right tube is all messed up and blocked, and while my left tube is totally clear, I have a huge polpy in the uterus on that side.

So basically, the past 18 months of TTC, hoping, trying to be patient and positive, was for NOTHING since it would have been a miracle to get pregnant (and sustain the pregnancy).

The Dr. wants to do both a laparoscopy and a hysteroscopy next week. I don't know how I can just take 3 days off work, plus I'm scared of surgery with anesthesia, and the subsequent pain. This infertility thing just gets worse and worse and I feel like just giving up.

Alexa, I am sorry to hear that your results were less than wonderful..... We know how you feel, different problems maybe but we are all trying to make sense of this crap we are going through right now. I don't really have any advice except try to stay strong and think positive.... And if you need to vent, please feel free.

I am sure some of the ladies on here will have some wise advice for you.

Thanks. I feel guilty complaining about this considering so many of you have been through so much worse!

My DH keeps telling me to be positive, and that if I can get the problems removed, it will be easier to get pregnant. I am trying, but I just feel so resentful and defeated right now.

I know...it took me a long time to admit I might have a "fertility" issue. It is tough.

DH is right in some respects, you can take measures to improve things. But you also need to get your feelings out. Don't try to control them, because I have learned that ...you can't. So feel what you feel, and hopefully this too shall pass..... Good luck and don't be afraid to post any questions!!

Although I have never had a lap....I do know several girls who have. They said that the recovery is easy....and they didn't experience any pain.

You also have options. Some women opt to not have laproscopic surgery. You can just do the hysteroscopy and for that there is no incision. The hysteroscopy will remove the polyp.

Are they doing the lap to see if endometriosis caused your right tube to be blocked ?

I am reading a book now called, "How To Get Pregnant" by Dr. Silber. It's quite interesting because he is anti-laproscopic surgery. Yet when I had my consult with a doctor from Cornell, he was pushing the idea. My consult this week, the RE wasn't fond of it.

Seriously your head can spin from all the different perspectives. Just make the right choice for yourself. I am so sorry you have to deal with this.

My RE did say that whether or not to do the lap was up to me. But if I don't do it:

- I will only have a chance of conception in one tube

- I won't know WHAT the blockage is (infection, endo, etc.)

- there is a possibility that whatever it is can spread to the other tube

In that book, what reasons does the Doc give for being anti-lap?

The main reason he is against it is because if you have a lap, there is a chance that it can affect your ovaries. He states how sometimes the ovarian reserved is lowered by lap surgery. Of course, this is not always the case. He is just a doctor who is pro IVF and sees no reason for doing a lap. If you pick up the book you will get a better understanding.

Here is a post I found awhile back in regards to having one functioning tube. It's written by a woman on a fertility board. I found it interesting. I believe MrsJ. ...conceived the cycle she ovulated from the side of a blocked tube.

First off - Have you seen my ticker lately? Or the photo of my huge belly? Well - this pg was accomplished with only one tube - the other one was 100% blocked... If your Dr. is telling you that it's hard to become pregnant or it makes it more difficult, then he is WRONG!!! Let me try & explain it to you the way that my RE explained it to me... Basically, the ends of the tubes hang so close to each other that the little finger like parts at the ends actually intermingle with each other... And they are both extremely close to your overies... It is a missconception that if you release an egg from your right ovary, then it's your right tube that picks it up... In fact, it could be either ovary releasing & either tube picking up the egg... What happens when one tube is blocked, is that the blocked tube quits trying to grab the eggs & the other tube is the one that does it every time... Even a lot of Dr.s aren't aware of this... But I have verified it with several specialists - The tubes are not far away from each other as you see in diagrams & drawings - But as I said before, they dangle kind of intertwined at the ends... Once the good tube has grabbed the egg, it starts making it's way through the tube... At that point (if timing is correct) then the sperm will find & fertilize the egg --- it takes apx. 5 full days for the egg (fertilized or not) to make it through the tubes & into the uterus. At that point, if the egg has been fertilized, it will try to implant into the uterine lining...

My RE actually showed me copies of three seperate studies done on this subject... All three indicated the same thing - there was little to no difference at all in the chance of pg occuring whether the patient had both tubes functioning or just one. One of the studies was done with all IUI patients (that's what I did) & the other two studies were done with natural cycles... It was very complelling evidence to me that it makes no difference at all if you have one blocked tube... Your Dr. sounds like he is unaware of this fact...

I'm so sorry about your results. I know how upsetting it is to find out everything isn't working right. I haven't had a lap or a hystrogram(sp) but I was told by several people that have one tube blocked shouldn't be that much of a hindrance. Because your ovaries and Fallopian tubes aren't connect and the Fallopian tubes have finger like ends, either tube can grab the egg from either ovary.

Again, I know how hard this is. We are all here for you if you want to vent!

just wanted to send some I dont know much about this, but I can tell you I was so afraid of anesthesia the first time I had it. Since I have been under 3x and each time was nothing to it!

To answer redstar's question, I am seeing Dr. Kligman. I like him a lot. He was by no means "pushing" me to have the lap, but when I saw what that tube looked like on the screen (not smooth and open like the other one - it was all jumbled up in a ball), it just seemed to me that trying to fix it was a good idea. Or, at least trying to figure out WHAT it was in there that was causing it. I don't know what to do now, I am very confused.

I am not familiar with Dr. Kligman but I think when it comes to Cornell you are in excellent hands.

What I have learned is that our instinct is usually correct. Taking time to listen to yourself..will probably lead you on the right track.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Good news is that laps have very successful rates, as well as tubal cannulations. When I had my HSG, I was told both tubes were completely blocked and likely had to be removed before moving on to invitro. I did my own research, asked for a tubal cannulation Rx, went in to get the procedure, and was told my tubes were in perfect condition and NOT blocked. So anything could happen. Best of luck to you!

I am so sorry you had to get this news, but to reiterate what Michelle said, even with one tube you can still get pg. My friend had an ectopic pregnancy in November and they had to remove her tube. She got pg the very next month and is in her 8th week with everything o.k. so far. Plus, the Dr. showed her in her sonos how the ectopic pg. she release the follicle on her right ovary and it was caught by her left tube where the ectopic occured. So you can truly get pg with one tube and everything redstar and mrsj said is 100% accurate.

the procedures are scheduled for this Wednesday...I go in for the pre-op blood test tomorrow morning

the worst part so far was having to explain to my boss (as vaguely as possible) why I needed time off!
