Washing baby clothes?
I am a first time mom, so I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. What needs to be washed before the baby uses them and how far ahead do you do the laundry? Also, what type of detergent do you use? Lastly, is fabric softener used? I just had my shower and I have tons of clothes, sheets and blankets and I have no idea what to do.

Wash what you think you will be using in as soon as the baby is born. I wouldn't wash every single thing you receive as it is possible the baby would outgrow it by the time you decide to use it. At least you have the option to exchange or return the item. I use baby all or dreft (personally i think they are the same) and no fabric softener.

Definetly agree on not washing everything. I wash with Dreft and I use fabric softner.

Definately was the size N or 0-3 month onesies, side snap t-shirts, footie PJs and some sheets, recieving blankets, burp clothes, etc.
Don't wash the bigger clothes yet because you may want to return/exchange them or might not even use them all.
But I would get the stuff ready that you know you will use -- those essentials! Oh, and plenty of washcloths! We couldn't use baby wipes at first because she was sensitive and thank GOD we had a lot of washclothes already cleaned because we went through about 8 a day!!
Also we used Baby Dreft in the beginning but it is expensive. We switched to All Baby and even Purex makes a baby detergent that we get once in a while that is very inexpensive. Now that she is 6 months we use All Free & Clear for all of our clothes.

my plan is to wash all the bedding and take home outfit(s) a week or so ahead of time. i'll leave the rest with tags unwashed for my mother to do while i'm in the hospital.
i don't want to wash all the newborn items in case she's a turkey, and i don't want to wash the larger items in case we have too much and need to return as well...

FYI we were just recently told not to use fabric softener b/c it invalidates the fire retardency of the infant sleepwear. DH and I had no idea so I figured I should share with you guys. Fabric Softeners are a petroleum product.

we washed all clothes, bedding and will be washing dh and my clothes and sheets w/ dreft baby detergent. i was told to pre-wash everything baby will be in touch with. you could go crazy doing it all, but just the major things that he/she will be around all the time is good

This is true plus they could have an allergic reaction to it too
I use Baby All and love the way it smells

I washed everything in Dreft.
I washed her blankets, wash cloths, towels, bibs, socks, onesies, any clothes I planned on putting her in (some I left in the closet with tags on because I don't know if they will fit or if/when she will wear them).
I also made sure I removed all tags from her stuffed animals, blankies, bibs, etc. because I read in Parenting magazine about a little girl who cut her cornea on a tag!
Oh yeah and I washed all her rattles and pacifiers and anything else she may put in her mouth (these I washed by hand, not in the washer )

I used Dreft, actually my baby team used Dreft. My sisters went into action as soon as I went into pre-term labor. We only washed them for the first 2 months. Then my sister pointed out that if they were being held by me & not having a reaction to my laundry detergeant, I could switch back to Tide.

Dreft is good. So is Ivory Snow.
You should be able to use Dye free, fragrance free detergent. All makes one.

I also did this, plus I washed the PJs that I will be wearing in the hospital in Dreft so that if the baby is up against me they will be as good as the clothes the baby will be in.

I washed a bunch, enough for 1 week, used Baby All. I do use fabric softner sheets in the dryer. Some of her stuff goes in with our stuff with the Purex Hypoallergenic.
I was told that the baby detergents are special because they do not strip the PJ's of their special flame retardancy....
I've put her in brand new stuff without washing it first, and not a problem!

I am going to wash all of the Newborn and 0-3 stuff a few weeks before our littlr girl is due. All in Dreft detergent. Also, blankets and bedding. I will probabkly hold off on the larger sizes for now...
