so i am going for a root canal tomorrow and I need to know
what do i expect?? should i take advil before I leave? is it as bad as everyone says? any pain afterwards and for how long? for some reason i have anxiety over this!!!!

For me it did not hurt at all. I guess it also depends on how gentle your dentist is.

my dentist is NOT doing it.. he recommended me to a specialist who deals with this. now I trust my dentist and his recommendation but who knows???

You should be fine. I had one and didn't have any real pain afterwards. The worst part was the novacaine injections. Be prepared to have a temporary crown put in made of a kind of uncomfortable grainy material. At least that's what happened with me until my real crown was ready which was about 2 weeks.

I had one a few years ago and can't really remember ts (so I guess it wasn't THAT bad)

It actually wasn't as painful as i imagined. Advil worked for me i never even filled the prescriptions they gave me. I think the worst part of it all is its very uncomfortable, especially sitting there for two hours with your mouth open and them working taking x-rays and working some more and so on. They give you plenty of novacaine and they keep giving you more as it wears off. I have had novacaine before and knew what it felt like but when they gave me a shot of it in the roots that stung, just to warn you.

my dentist did the same thing and actually the guy was awesome. i didn't even feel a thing and i was so nervous. afterwards i was sore but took alieve and felt fine. it actually wasn't so bad.

you will feel 100x better once its done (if its bothing now that is)
you won't feel anything until the novacain falls off (2-3 hours after the start)
You will be sore a couple of hours but nothing major. Just take some asprin and carry on with your day. That tooth will feel weak so don't eat on it till a day or two later.
Your seeing a specialist probally because it may be a molor...some dentist don't do those and send you to a specilist who do this normally.

actually its not sore but my dr is so surprsed and he said its only a matter of time. My tooth is actually broken thats why he sent me to a specialist...

I had all four taken out years ago. I don't happen to handle the gas very well and that was the worst part for me, but I know I am in the minority.
I think I had some decent pain killers afterwards

i think you are talking about wisdom teeth... i have yet to get that done... tomorrow is the root canal!!!!! but thanks for the info!!!

Please don't worry too much, i have had more than my share of root canals, and as long as there isn't any infection, and the doc gives you plenty of novocaine, it will be over quickly, there is usually more than one visit,though.
I am going for a tooth extraction Sat., and since i have alot anxiety with anything involving the dentist, oral surgeon or anything like that i am nervous.

I just had one last december with Dr. Marcus in Huntington he is a specialist and he was awesome. I didnt take anything prior b/c I didnt want it to interfere with the lidocaine ( the new novacaine- its not called that anymore) I didnt feel a thing and was like thats it???????? after the numbness wore off it was a lil soar and thats when I took the advil and I was fine. the temp is annoying you h ave to be super careful not to eat on that side and crack it. Good luck, Im sure you will be fine.

I went to a cr@ppy dentist last yr and had a root canal and was in sooo much pain for 2 days...
Then, this yr I went to an awesome dentist to have one done, and I was only sore for that day.
As long as you have a good dentist, he will make sure that you have minimal pain...You will be fine

i just got my tooth extracted last friday and it was fine - no pain or anything - and that was with being pregnant which means less powerful drugs!

awww dentist buddy!! 
root canals arent bad at all- honestly, i fall asleep while they'r edoing them. I usually take 2 advil before i go to the dentist, so that it kicks in when the novicaine wears off. The times i didnt take advil werent bad at all, but you never know if he's going to have a hard time or not, so i take them just to be on the safe side.
i got 2 of my wisdom teeth out today- now, That... Not so much fun... i definitely choose the root canals over the extractions!

oh i hope you are feeling better from your wisdom teeth removal.. the root canal was so painless that i agree i am scared to get my wisdom teeth removed....
i have to get those out but i have to first heal from this, geta permanent filling and crown for this tooth AND go for my 2nd half of periodontal treatment. then the fun wisdom removal...

The pain for me was unbearbale BEFORE....after was a walk in the park. My dentist numbed me up and did his thing and they gave me a few painkillers before I left.
I was in hardly any pain after, just a little dopey....
ETA: The dentist makes the difference!!! My mom had a crappy one who really messed her up......
