Grrr, I hate family drama
So today is my sisters brithday and we always go out for dinner on our birthdays. The last two birthdays have been mine and DH so we have done lunch since DH has to be at work at 3.
So weeks ago my neighbors invited us to a BBQ today, I asked them to make it in the afternoon since I figure we were going to dinner for my sisters birthday.
Three days ago my mother tells me they planned lunch, but could switch it to dinner at 6:30 so we could do both.
Well today my mother calls to tell me my sister wants to do it at 5 so she can be home to watch the Mets game.
So now I am suppose to cut my plans short, rush to get there, rush through an unpleasant get together so she can get home in time.
Keep in mind I dont have the best relationship with her to begin with, and usually find her annoying. So now I have to sit through an unpleasant dinner spattered with I hope they bring the food fast so I can get home in time.  I dont want to go, told my mother I probably wont make it and now I get the guilt. You should have known not to make plans on your sisters birthday. Uuugh I want to vomit. I really dont want to go

I know you don't want to go, but you should- it's your sister and unfortunately you can't always chose your family.

I know this is true. BUt this is all the time. It is always about her, no matter what we do, if DS doesnt hold her hand its a big scene. If I ask her not to smoke in his face, I am being a ******. We had this plan for a week and I get the call this morning.
My mother actually said I should not make any plans for the entire day so I could be available whenever she wanted me.
Keeep in mind, my sister has been to my house twice in 4 years and she lives 2 miles away. Once was Christmas when she refused to open her presents here because it "wasnt tradition".

I would stick to my original plans with my neighbors & see my sister later. I think it's absurd for someone to expect you & your family to wait around all day until they make up their minds & tell you of their plans. Tell your parents
I generally think family comes first, but not in this case.

Oh and did I mention she missed DS first birthday because she was living out of state at the time and it was too expensive to come home.

I would honestly go to both. You will cause more drama if you don't. Besides it seems like it was your mother's opinion that you should stay home the entire day of your sister's birthday. Try not to hold old grudges and just be there for your sister's birthday. You can't choose your family, but in the end, family is really very important. Enjoy the BBQ and then enjoy the dinner.
