HELP...ASAP...PLEASE...UPDATE 7/18

DH called me (I'm in Las Vegas)....our dog bit my step-daughter on the cheek because she was playing too rough with him and tried to take his toy. He is normally a very good dog. He thinks the cut is deep, and she might need stictches, but he is afraid to take her to the ER, because he thinks they will take the dog away for biting.

Anyone know if this is true? I'm freaking out, because there is nothing I can do from 2500 miles away...and now I'm worried sick about all of them!!!

UPDATE 7/18:
She got 12 stitches! DH brought the dog's collar with him to the ER to show them he had his current rabies shots. They told him HE has to call the health department and report it, not them...which is silly because we are not going to report our own dog. If the police come to us, then we will have all the paperwork necessary, but we are not making the first move. Apparently....she wasn't playing with the dog....she was supposed to be sleeping (after 9pm), and DH was down in the basement sleeping on the couch with the dog while he was waiting for the laundry to be done. The dog was fast asleep. She snuck downstairs, and she tried to move him
(probably to get him to come upstairs with her) and he got startled so he snapped at her (which he has never done before...but again, when he's sleeping, nobody usually bother's him).

I just spoke to DH...she's still asleep as they didn't get back fro the ER until 3 AM. He is going to keep her home from camp for the rest of the week, and she has to go see the plastic sugeon on Thursday.

Whatever the case - if she needs stitches, she needs to go to the ER.
What a terrible thing to happen!!

if he thinks it looks that deep, it probably is and she more than likely needs a stitch or two....
if he waits until tomorrow, then stitching it and getting it to close/heal properly will be a little more tricky, and she may wind up with more of a scar...Chat Icon
he should take her tonight...Chat Icon

Re: HELP...ASAP...PLEASE

Someone who lives down the block from my parents had something like this happen. Their dog bit their older daughter on the face...the girl was about 3 years old or so. She told me that the dog was always so good with the kids, letting them lay all over him and pull on his ears...and they were watching tv and the dog just snapped and bit the girl. They ended up putting the dog to sleep because they were afraid something like that would happen again. I'm so afraid of something like this happening when I have kids.

Well - are the rules different because it's not a strange dog, it's your family dog who was provoked?

I hope everything works out and your stepdaughter is okay. Years ago my sister was bitten VERY badly by our neighbors dog (profuse bleeding, countless stitches and had to stay in the hospital for a few days) and even then they didn't try to take the dog away. Our neighbors ended up getting rid of the dog anyway since it was such a vicious attack and they had children of their own. I don't think they would try to take your dog away though. Keep us updated! Memorial Day weekend my shih-tzu bit my son (who was 9 months at the time). The dog bit his upper lip and we took him to the hospital. Thank goodness he was okay and did not require stitches (he is completely healed), but the hospital is mandated to report it. The accident occurred at 3pm and by 6pm our local police left a message on our phone inquiring about the bite. We had to file a report with Nassau county (health dept) detailing rabies shots and other immunizations, etc., as well as with our local police dept.

when my 2 dogs(both girls got into a fight) i tried to seperate them and i got bit. i went to the hopsital to get the stiches and i had the town call me up and said i had to show prove of immunations, and rabies shot record or i had 48 hours to go have it all redone. otherwise then they would have taken both dogs and gotten a fine. even if they are yours they must report all bites to the town. no matter how big or little. and if it is your dog you must show proof of shots, and as long as there are no other complaints they where ok. good luck and keep us updated!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

They won't make you get rid of the dog. Your daughter should go to the ER though, because she should be checked out. You never know what damage could have been done.

I think someone has to file a complaint in order to have you euthanize the dog. I remember when that woman was attacked by those 2 pit bulls the owners were fighting with the town in court to keep the dogs alive so unless your stepdaughters mother makes a stink you will most likely just have to show a record of shots for the dog.
