Spinoff to When you leave for work...
How long to you leave your dogs in the house alone? We're thinking of getting a dog but we're out all day for work.

If you are gone all day for work, you may want to get an older puppy/dog....the young ones can't handle being alone that long. When I got a puppy, it was only because my DH schedule was opposite of mine, so someone was always home. Now that we are gone long days, I make sure he goes to doggie day care at least once a week.

We just got a doggie even though we both work full time. She is alone all day - from 830 to 630. We didnt get a puppy for this reason...she is about 15 months. We just got her so we are keeping her in her cage during the day..but eventually, we are going to have a dog walker come 1-2 times a day.

for approx 6 hrs give or take (sometimes I leave earlier so it's longer most of the times I leave later so it's shorter)

Even if the dog is alone in your house for a long time, s/he will be better there than in a shelter...

I am lucky beacuse I can come home for lunch...so usually 4-5 hours.

3-4 hours.
i leave usually at 12:45. Dh is usually home by 4
other times i dont leave for work til 7:30 or 8:45 PM, so dh is home by then
once in a blue moon there will be one day a week the dogs are home by themselves from 1pm til 9pm, but thats rare.

when we got my puppy, we crated her for a while when we were at work. Now she has free roam of the house, she sometimes will still have accidents if left alone too long...I wonder how to break her of this habit...we do not want to crate her again....

Here's why I ask.
I leave for work around 6:25 and don't get home until around 4:45. That's a long day for a dog.
I have 4 cats, do you think that makes any difference?
