Wallpaper removal?
How difficult is this to do yourself?

depends what's underneath!
it can range from super easy to jump out the window frustrating.
what we thought would take 2 days in the kitchen turned into 4-5 days because even though the wallpaper came off easy (no steaming required), the glue and oil base paint underneath needed to be scraped flat which took FOREVER! the painting my mother did in a couple hours, the prepping of the walls was the PITA...

It wasn't doable for us! The wallpaper was put directly on the drywall, and no matter what we used, the wall would peel off with the paper. We got a few quotes for removal and skimcoating, and found it was cheaper to re-sheetrock!!

We have it directly on the sheetrock in our kitchen too. We spackled over the seams in the wallpaper and sanded and repeated the process a few times and it came out pretty good.
We took down the wallpaper in the rest of the house this Summer - yes, the whole house was wallpaper and border It was unbelievably frustrating

I removed wallpaper over sheetrock with a paper tiger scorer and a steamer after many failed attempts with DIF. I also used the same method to remove wallpaper with WATERPROOF GLUE in my bathroom. I did a decorative treatment over both as it is nearly impossible to make the walls smooth IMO. Here is a post of the rooms I took wallpaper out of that I posted a couple of weeks ago.

well after 3 days , i'm stuck in kitchen.
i took off top wallpaper layer, but stuck with the backing still on wall. i've tried everything and i managed to do a 2x3'spot in over 2 hours. Does anyone know if i can wallpaper over this backing if i sand all the edges. the paper i bought is a heavy duty paper and i think it would work, but not sure if it will stick to the wall. the wallpaper i bought is strippable, but not pasted. i need to use a paste. any suggestions from anyone? thanks from jackie in md.

Did you try warm water and vinegar in a spray bottle? We had borders we had to take down and this worked so well. We peeled the front of the border off then soaked the backing. Then used a spackle knife to scrape it off. GOOD LUCK!

I've put up and taken down alot of wallpaper. I've used everything from the pre-pasted to the heavy grasscloth. If the paper was put up with paste or the wall wasn't primed first, it will be more difficult to get the backing off. Yes, you can paper over it. Make sure the edges are smooth and, more importantly, prime it first. This is a critical step that most overlook. When you put your paper on over the backing, make sure all the large bubbles are smoothed over. It can be difficult to get out all the small bubbles. While it is wet, it will look like the smaller bubbles will stay as they are. They won't. While it is drying, the paper and the backing will adhere to one another and should form a smooth surface.

yes i did, but took me hours to do a small area.. i think i'm going to prime the backing and then wallpaper. wish me luck..and congratulations on new baby...

Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and they will have the primer you need. I do know there are different kinds of primers. Check the container to see if there is a difference in primers for pre-pasted as opposed to non-pasted. Primer is not only for when you want to take the paper down, but, it is, also, for keeping the paper on the walls. I am not sure, but, I think there is only one kind of paste. It's pretty thick. Just make sure that when you put it on the back of the paper, you get all the lumps out. If you don't, it will show through the paper. Make sure when you put your first sheet on, that it is straight. Don't follow your wall. Always add an extra half-inch to your measurements before you cut. That way if your wall is crooked and you need more at the top than the bottom, you won't be short. Once you get your first sheet up, the rest should follow easily. I've always found heavier paper to work with easier. It doesn't tear easily and you can adjust it without too much trouble. Wallpapering is not as hard as it appears. It just takes patience.
