A little early but...Christmas trees and Toddlers
Our living room is our main (really only) living area. We spend most of the day in there when we are at home.
Its babyproofed as much as we could make it and I can leave him there if I need to do something in another room but I won't be able to do that with a tree in the room.
How do you keep a toddler away from the Christmas tree?
I was thinking just getting a table top tree but he'd still be able to pull it down.

What about buying a smaller tree and putting it on a table in a corner or put a baby gate around it. DS hopefully will be crawling at that time and I am wondering the same and this is all I came up with.

I would do what you would normally do & just play it by ear. My son never touched the tree,he would just look at it and was mezmorized (at 11 months) the next year he was almost 2 and continued being mezmorized. Never really touching it and if he did venture too close- a stern NO from me would send him running to the couch.
My niece on the other hand was scared of the tree and avoided that area of the room.
I find that when you go out of your way to make something unaccesable to DC,they become that much more curious.

My son was 17 mos last xmas and since we had a small apartment at the time, we decided not to put the tree up. We dont celebrate xmas at our house anyway. we usually go to our family's homes and i figured Dom was not really old enough to notice a difference.

Last year DS was 19 months at Christmastime and I posed the same question....
We put the tree up and decided to play it by ear. He never went near it!
And the living room is where we spend most of the day.
If he seemed at all overly curious about the tree my DH was going to take fishing line and secure it to the wall. But we never needed to. He admired it from afar!

Im not sure what to do- Bryan is all over the place now Im sure he will be very curious by then 18months, Im not sure how it will all work out.

We had to put all the ornaments up high out of reach and we tied a string from the top of the tree to the wall behind it just for extra measure.

We used our baby gate to gate the tree IN..and keep Molly out. We will do that again this year. It was perfect. We just wrapped the gate around the tree.

We put up our tree and Tristan didn't even bother it. We put plastic cheapy ornaments on the bottom where he can reach, so if he did mess with it the tree was toddler safe. Normally he gets into everything so I was surprised he left the tree alone. Kids are curious so no matter where you put it up they are going to want to explore. Good luck!!!

I think this is what we are going to do. We have that Supergate system so we may just put that around the tree.

Us too. I figure we'll be putting the ornaments up high for about another 5 years (which is when the Lenox and Waterford ornaments can be hung).

I never had a problem with Andrew - his first christmas he was 7 months and last year he was 19 months. We were set to put up the gate around it, but never did and we did not need it. Some kids just don't go near it, other will knock it right over!

What's worse a toddler or a cat attacking the tree? Please we already can't even put up a tree because of DH's pain in the *** cat, and our son is not even a toddler yet...I told DH that there is no way I am dealing with keeping a toddler and a cat away from the tree. We tried a small tree on top of a small table and the cat knocked it down. I'm sorry but I just hate cats. No offense to you cat lovers out there, but they are annoying!!!
