Teachers- need some planning advice...
I just started a unit on artists- the kids are reading biographies and writing fiction about how a piece was created (think the middle school version of Girl With a Pearl Earring)
Anyway, since it's Poetry Month I want to work that in too. Problem is, I am not anywhere near done with this unit. I was thinking about doing poetry twice a week.
Question: do you think this would be confusing for the kids (sixth grade, on/above level). We have an administrative intern in our school who is SO critical so I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. I'm so anxious and we have no real curriculum to speak of.

Could you set aside one day a week as Poetry Day?? Be consistent every week with the same day or two. Prior to my students taking the Math Assessment, every Friday was Assessment question day. We spent the whole class looking at old Assessment questions and working through them, developing strategies, etc.

There are poems that have been written about certain pieces of art. Maybe you can tie some of those works in with the unit on artists.

Maybe as a response to a picture, they can write a poem. Teach them to analyze poetry the way you analyze a painting.
