Crate Question

My puppy(3 months old) is starting to get used to her crate and She's really good and she even sleeps all night through. But we have noticed that if we try to put her inside her crate during the day if we have something to do and she's not too sleepy, she will start crying and barking. When she starts crying, we don't let her out because we don't want to reinforce that behavior. She will eventually stop and fall asleep unless we are done with what we are doing and then take her out after she stopped crying/barking. Do any of you have any suggestions/tips to help her stop doing this?
Much appreciated.

Re: Crate Question

Sorry I did not see this earlier. You can try giving her a new toy with a treat (like maybe a Kong toy) that is just for use when you have to crate your pup other than for sleep.

I will try this. Even though we put a few of her toys inside the crate so she can play and chew on them.....

We tried crating Molly -- that lasted all of one night. Sorry I can't be of more help.

What's a binkie kong?

Oh look, a Binkie for the baby! Puppies love to chew on everything with their little needle sharp teeth and it can cost a fortune to keep replacing your stuff. The Binkie is the perfect toy to teach your puppy to chew on his own toys and not on your shoes. Puppy picks up a shoe, trade him for a Binkie saying, "That's mine, this is yours. What a good dog." Kong has done it again, a baby Binkie toy that has a real job.

Re: Crate Question

I agree, Kongs are great to keep them occupied!

From what I know about crate training it is a Process. You start with leaving the door open and feeding your dog in there (putting the bowl a little further back each time) and tossing treats in there so they begin to associate it with nice things. Then you can work up to shutting the door for a second and giving your dog a treat. Then have it closed for a minute, 2 minutes, etc. with you by the crate, then in the next room, that type of thing - working up to leaving the house briefly. I've heard some places say it's okay for your dog to whine/bark for 10-15 minutes before settling down. Some other things that may help is leaving a t shirt or something with your scent on it in the crate, leaving the tv or radio on, and using "Comfort Zone."

You can find tons of detailed crate training resources online.

We have done all of this. We have bought training books for her breed and for other dogs in general. She doesn't do it all the time but if she's not sleepy, she'd start barking/crying for a good 45 minutes. We feel so bad and it is a little nerve racking to hear her doing this but we do not take her out because we do not want to reinforce her behavior. The only thing we haven't done is to put the treats inside the crate for her.
Thanks so much everyone for posting...any other ideas please?

Re: Crate Question

I had the same issue with my pup...When we first started the crate training, she would cry if we put her in if she knew we were still in the apartment. (She was fine if we left). I personally could not take her crying, so I let her out (despite my DH's disapproval)! She would only go in her crate when we left the apartment. At night, she slept with us. Now (about five weeks later) she is starting to go in the crate on her own, especially if I am in the kitchen cooking. She loves to be by me, but gets tired of being knocked into, so she'll just go in her cage and lay down until I'm done cooking. I just always keep the cage very comfy for her. Her door is kept open and I keep two of her toys and one of my t-shirts in there. Whenever she goes inside to "inspect" it, I praise her and throw her a treat. She's now starting to nap in there at random times of the day. As long as she sees that I'm busy cooking or even cleaning, she's fine with going in there. But, if we're just hanging out, I don't keep her in the cage. And, I never force her in there or use it as a punishment if she has done something bad. Just remember lots of praise and reassurance for when she goes in there or even just goes near it!

Thanks for sharing this.
We never have used it as punishment either. We also keep the crate door open and for the most part, we only put her in there if we are going to another part of the house and we cannot supervise her to see what she's doing or if we have to do something or we are leaving the house. There has been only two times where my husband has been using the computer and she just went in the crate on her own and fell asleep. I wasn't home at that time. We feed her inside her crate too to make positive associations for her. I think I'm going to try putting treats inside the crate like some of you mentioned and also when she goes in on her own, which right now, it's not a lot. She follows me and my husband everywhere. I will also start praising her if she goes in on her own to reinforce this behavior.
If anyone else have other tips to share, please post it. Thanks so much to everyone that have shared.Chat Icon

Re: Crate Question

I am having the opposite problem - My pup (also 3 months) doesn't mind her crate when we're home (w/ the door open) She goes in and out during the day and even naps in there -
Unfortunately we have to leave her in there during the day as we both work, but she sleeps all day -
My problem is at night ! - She goes to her crate willingly at about 12am to 'sleep' but then wakes up between 3:30 and 4am ....- I assumed it was b/c she had to "go" so I would get up and take her out. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't, now I think she just wants OUT of the crate !! - We try to tire her out before we put her to sleep for the night, but that's obviously not working ! My husband will not believe that our apartment walls are soundproof so he panics and takes her out so we won't wake our neighbors ........ But I'm not interested in spending the rest of my life having a dog run my house and I feel like once she gets used to getting her way, it's all over and my husband and I will end up taking turns sleeping w/ her on the couch forever (putting her in our bed is NOT an option for us...)
Any suggestions ?? HELP !!

We are really lucky that she sleeps through the night. Sometimes we put her at bed at 9:30pm and she doesn't get up until 7am or 9am next day but my husband leaves for work a little later than me and can feed her and let her out before he goes to work. It seems that you are doing the right thing by tiring her out before putting her in the crate at night. Do you usually take her out to pee before putting her in the crate? We always do this to make sure that her bladder is not full. You might want to put in the crate some clothes with the scent of you and your husband. You may want to cover her crate and this will help somewhat. They also sell covers for the crates. We just put a blanket over it. We cover her crate and just leave one side without covering to give her some air..the side that she is unable to see us..... You may also want to leave the TV/Radio on low. We do this every night. For us, putting her in our bed is not option either. I don't even let her in our bedroom because I don't think it's a good idea and also our bedroom is carpeted and she's not fully housetrained. If your puppy is crying and you take her out, you are reinforcing the behavior and she will do it even more. And it's like you go backwards in your training every time you do this. If we put her in the crate when we were home for a little while considering we had something to do, she'd start barking/crying for a good 45 minutes and then she'd stop. Now she cries for less time because we don't let her out at all if she's crying/barking. Maybe when she gets up at that time, you can take her out to see if she has to go and then sit next to her for a little bit until she gets groggy and then put her back in the crate. Maybe this will help somewhat. I know it can be frustating but hang in there. Your pup will eventually have a schedule and you will be able to relax and sleep through the night.

Re: Crate Question

I alternate the toys in Katie's crate. The Kong really keeps her busy though. Also, I always leave the radio on for her.

ETA: She would put up a fuss if it wasn't time for bed and she was crated with us home. When we can't keep an eye on her I gate off the kitchen.

Re: Crate Question

I think Lulu is getting used to her crate. We bought some new toys for her (Kong) that keep her busy. She cries once when we put her in the crate when we cannot take care of her and then she stops. She's getting so much better. I'm glad we never gave in opening the crate door for her and letting her out.
Marisa....How is it going with you?

Re: Crate Question

I remember having all these issues w/ Chewie. Now he loves his crate and runs in there to sleep all the time on his own, especially when we are getting ready for work. Too bad he wasn't like that as a puppy.Chat Icon

Re: Crate Question

My puppy doesnt have a problem with sleeping in there - but if he knows you are home during the day he will cry until you let him out...

If I am sitting at the computer which is right next to his cage, and he wants to go in his cage to get his toy - he will stand there and watch me to make sure I am not going to turn around and shut the cage door on him when he goes in there.....I will admit I have done it in the past - My dog is really smart.....

Re: Crate Question

How is it going w/ me ?? - Lol !!!
Lola is out of control !!! I spent this week trying to get her to like her crate little by little - We live in an NYC Studio apartment so it's bit more difficult to deal w/ the yelping and barking and whining. (not just for our sanity, but I don't want neighbors that hate us !!)
I feed her in there w/ the door open, and put her in there for 10 - 20 minutes at a time while I take a shower, do the dishes - whatever. She cries for a minute or 2 and once i'm out of the room she stops. - This is great, but for some reason, if my Husband is home, she wants NO part of the crate (Probably b/c she knows he's the one who runs to let her out when she barks.......- I could smack him for that !)
I try to tire her out before bed, but she's still waking up at 3 and 5 AM
We're going to vet today so we'll see if he has any brilliant ideas !! Thanks again everyone for your advice !!
