Teachers who are TTC

I know in reality you cant "pick" when you would like to have a baby. However, what time of year do you feel is ideal as a teacher? Do you think it is better to deliver at the end of a school year? summer? beginning?

Re: Teachers who are TTC

I'd have to say be PG during the year and give birth at the end like Stefanie did. That way you get the summer off!

Re: Teachers who are TTC

I think Lora (kelly4) timed it perfectly. Get pg over the summer so that you are home during your first trimester. I don't know about everyone else, but the thought of being in front of a class while I feel like throwing up is my biggest nightmare. Lora will teach until Februrary and then be home with her baby when the classrooms are SO unbearably hot at the end of the school year. Every teacher I know cannot TOLERATE the heat at the end of the school year when they're in their last trimester. Too bad everyone can time it so perfectly! Chat Icon

That's my biggest fear as well - being sick as a dog in front of a class fo 25 students! But then I guess it has to happen sometime! Thank God I have an aide in my class!!!

Ideally I would hae liked to have given birth in January and taken off until September. That's not going to happen now and at 35 I don't want to wait a whole other year.

I do have tenure, been there 8 years and teach two courses that no one else teaches... should be interesting when I get preggos.

Re: Teachers who are TTC

like Theresa, I would ideally like to give birth in January/February/March, take off the rest of the year & return in September. Then the baby would be 7-8 months old before he/she starts daycare.

However, I am getting so frustrated with my wacky cycle & would love to get pregnant at any point in the year.

i always said April ( which is when iw ouldve been due oif i hadnt M/C) and its b/c you get april break plus about 6-8 weeks off depending on how much tme you have saved and by the point its the end of june so you get to be home for 5 montsh with your baby with paybefore you have to go back

This plan sounds ideal! Would I be allowed to tack a 12 week family leave onto the summer too (like starting in September?) Because that would give me until the holidays...

Re: Teachers who are TTC

originally i thought i wanted to get pg in sept so that i would have the baby at the end of the school year. i ended up getting pg in june so i am due in march. i think it's perfect. i'll take the rest of the year off and then still have until sept. to go back to work. that means i'll have 6 months with the baby. personally, i'd rather take off at the end of the school year than the beginning. i'm a speech pathologist, not a teacher, but i'd still want to be the one to set everything up and have someone else follow through rather than coming into a classroom that was set up by someone else and kids that are used to another teacher.

Your FMLA doesn't count over the summer. I gave birth in April and I could have taken time into October under FMLA. As I was told, technically there is no where you to work in July and August so they can't count it against you.

I was going to say the same thing. My friend did that. She has been home since May, about 2 weeks before she had the baby. She will go back in October.

My friend did the same. She came back after the Thanksgiving Break because that worked as a nice transition.

I'm bumping because I too want more opinions. I mean, what if you're not tenured, either? Chat Icon

I'm not tenured, but I'm probably not going to go back after I have the baby. But in my district, if you aren't tenured they have to give you 12 weeks FMLA plus whatever sick/personal days you have whether you are tenured or not and they have to hold your job for you. If you are tenured you can take 1 year off for child care leave and still have your job when you return. Summer vacation also doesn't count in your leave so that's why I think it works out great to have a baby in the spring. You can take the rest of the year off plus have the summer before you have to go back. If I do go back in Sept., the baby will be 6 months already.

Re: Teachers who are TTC

I'm pregnant now and due in Feb as Susan mentioned. I like the way it worked out. I will take off from Feb to Sept. I am tenured though and probably wouldn't have taken off that much time if I weren't.

My friend isn't tenured and just had her baby in Aug. She is taking off until the last week of Oct. when her maternity runs out. She is scared to take off more even though her principal is SO nice and understanding and told her that she can take off as long as she wants b/c it won't affect her getting tenure. He told her to put her new family first and her job second during this important time in her life. I wish all principals can be this nice! She is right though in thinking that even though he is understanding, it's not gaurenteed in writing that she will get tenure and keep her job. I think she's doing the right thing!

Good luck!
