Penicillin allergies?

Mallory has been on Augmentin for an ear infection since the 31st and today has developed a rash on her belly and back.... we have an appointment with her Dr. at 2:30... Looks like an allergic reaction, is it usually delayed like this though... and could it cause screaming in the middle of the night?? I was up with her for a while last night, I don't know if that was from her teething or from the medicine?
Anyone have any experience with this?
TIA

meanwhile my son is on antibiotics for bronchitis and an inhaler for his wheezing and coughing fits...

Re: Penicillin allergies?

I hope they both feel better soon!

My brother has a penicillin allergy. For as long as I can remember he wears a braclet from this company Medic Alert it has a registration number etched on it along with the fact he's allergic to penicillin so that if they can't read it and he's unconscious in an emergency they will be able to call and know not to give it to him.

But hopefully it's just teething. Chat Icon

Re: Penicillin allergies?

Ok, it's not an allergic reaction, it's just a side effect of the Augmentin, and the screaming last night was most likely from the teething, not the medication, she's cutting a couple teeth all at once, poor thing. The Dr. said it was good that I came in though that way we didn't label it as an allergy when it wasn't.... ugh.... where are my healthy children

Sorry they're both sick. Hope they get better very soon!

Andrew has bronchiolitis and an ear infection and he's teething -- so I definitely feel your pain.

Re: Penicillin allergies?

my daughetr is allergic to penicillin, we didnt know until we gave her meds. that had penecillin in it. My daughter broke into hives all over her body. Her eyes were blood shot red and she was swelling up. We had to take her to the the ER because it got so bad.

I'm glad to hear that everything is okay. I know everybody gets scared about medication allergies -- as they should since they can be severe. But, everybody should know that a rash from a penicillin-type drug is a side effect, as your doctor stated, rather than an allergic reaction. It's really important that your child not be labeled as penicillin allergic if they really aren't since it greatly reduces the medications available to treat simple illnesses, if needed. This is definately different from the post by LadyLainez, where the child got hives and swelling -- which IS a real allergy.

FYI though -- a rash from a sulfa-type drug IS a true allergy. If ever in doubt, call your doctor, or your pharmacist.

I hope your kids get better soon. I'm sending you healthy vibes!! Chat Icon
