I cant figure my... UPDATE WITH PICS
My little boy who was sleeping 12hrs through the night has taken a turn for the worst...at first I swore it was just teeth...but the past week or so...hes been waking every 3 hrs starving....
Hence making his total intake of formula a day close to 40oz.
I was planning on discussing it at his 4 month visit next week...but I was really concerned, so I called the ped this morning.
He said its time to start cereal...40oz is way too much and not good for him.... I tried cereal once before, and it didnt work out to well... (but he was also barely 3 months old...)
My ped assured me 4-6 months is the usual age for starting cereal, and being that Ryan was 14lbs a month ago (I cant wait to see how much he weighs next week) that he's ready....
So tonight we will try oatmeal...They said to give it to him 2x's a day.....We leave here @ 7am... (RJ and I get up around 5am) I wanna be the one feeding him in the morning this 1st week.... can anyone tell me what their schedule is like...???
Im planning on doing:
cereal @ 6am 4oz bottle to follow
3-4hrs later 6oz bottle
3-4hrs later 6oz bottle
5-6 cereal & 4oz bottle
8:00- another 6oz bottle???
He usually goes to bed @ 7 so I dont know if he'll make that 8 bottle...Any suggestions...????
Please no flaming....I dont wanna hear how much formula is better for him...and he shouldnt be getting cereal...
Im not gonna let my child starve...and 40oz, is not healthy for him....I trust my ped advice, and intend to follow it, unless of course it seems to be making me child uncomfortable!

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
Just wanted to let you know that our pediatrician made the same recommendation when I told him Alex is eating between 35-40 ounces and waking every 2-3 hours in the night to eat. I'm going to wait another month, but he said it's perfectly fine to start introducing cereal now at 4 months...

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
I can't remember what the daily schedule was (I'm sorry) but we started cereal at 4 months and she had no problems digesting it. Just make it very liquidy in the beginning so that he gets used to eating off the spoon. I used to pour the formula out of her bottle and then feed her the rest of the bottle after she was done with the cereal. We started with 1 tablespoon of cereal and increased it as she started to finish that up.
Good luck!

No flames here. My doc specifically had us start cereal at 4 months and that is just how they do it at our practice. Bella was never overeating or anything.
We went for Oatmeal first, because rice is very binding and I didn't want to mess with the fact that Bella is so regular. Now we give her Barley too.
After a few days of cereal, they had us starting to introduce fruits.
Just be patient, it can be frustrating at times if they don't "get it" right away. They may seem like they are rejecting it and a lot of it is because they are used to s@cking on a bottle and don't know what to do with their tongue.
We are three weeks in and just when we thought she was getting the hang of it, we had BAD feedings. But in the past few days I realized I cannot be timid in feeding her. I just have to get the food in there, whether it feels like I am shoving it in or not. And you know what, this morning she did her best yet. I hope to finally start increasing the amount soon, but right now I am just glad she is eating what we are giving her.
He schedule right now is...
7am-7 oz bottle 10 am- 2tbsp cereal, 1/2 jar of fruit, and 4 oz bottle 1:30pm- 6 oz bottle 4pm-ish- 2 tbsp cereal, 1/2 jar of fruit, and 4 oz bottle 8pm-6-7oz bottle
My doc suggested that they not eat as soon as they wake up as they are super hungry then and bottle is best. Also, eventually, they said she will eat 5 tbsp (I will believe that when I see it)
She will start veggies at 5 months and meats at 6 months on the schedule they gave us.
GOOD LUCK! It can be so much fun to feed them and at times so frustrating! Hope things go well!
Thanks my ped said fruits are ok now 2...but im gonna take it one step @ a time......
I hear what your saying about the am feeding....but these 1st few times...im just not comfortable w/ anyone else but me and DH....I wanna make sure he has the hang of it, before i make it someone else responsibility....Do you think Im better off giving it @ noon....and 6pm?

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
Marissa, when Ryan wakes up is he starving for a bottle? If he is, then you're going to have a hard time feeding him cereal. I always give Jared a bottle first and then I give him some cereal. I agree with sarahsmommy, make it liquidy, so it's easy for him to take off the spoon. I also agree...that's too much formula to have (40 oz). Jared at 7 months only has 21 oz a day and three meals a day.
Good luck tomorrow!

I agree, I don't want anyone feeding Bella until I know she has the hang of it. I would do the noon and 6 pm to start...trust me, you want time and his attention. You won't get that if he is starving in the morning.
PS...we use two bibs, it's a mess!
and take lots of pics!

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
I don't know of anyone getting flamed for starting cereal when their pediatrician recommended it so have no fear, no flames here.
Anyway, when Jake started cereal at 4 months this was his schedule. I leave the house by 8am so it went like this.
6:30am - 2 tbsp cereal w/formula and a bottle that was 8oz minus whatever amount of formula I used to make the cereal - usually 6 1/2 - 7oz.
10:30am - 8oz bottle
2:30pm - 8oz bottle
6:30pm - Same as 6:30am feeding
In bed at 7pm and down for the night until he gets up at around 6am.
Our ped also told us to start with Oatmeal instead of Rice. We didn't introduce fruit until closer to 5 months.

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
Cassidy was about 3 months when we started cereal, because she was a little butterball and was also drinking too much formula.
When she started cereal, she had it 3x a day. We'd do a 4oz bottle and cereal for breakfast, same for lunch and dinner, and she'd have a bedtime bottle of about 6 oz. I also introduced fruits soon after cereal.
Good luck, hopefully RJ will go back to his sleeping ways

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
I only say that because when Jared gets up...it's like I never fed him at all...he's hyperventilating for a bottle...He'll scream for a bottle first over cereal...

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
I'm laughing at the title of your post, welcome to mommyhood!
Well, I know that I've told you before that he may just need more formula (if it comes in spurts) due to a growth spurt. I'm in no flaming you or anyone else, just saying sometimes infants go through periods where they may need more.
With that being said, I started Gabriella on cereal by 12 weeks and she was eating one meal a day at night. We used both rice and oatmeal. I remember someone saying one upset their infants tummies more than the other and I cannot remember which way it went. Gianni's been on rice for a little now and loves it! WIth him, he's weighed more than most and he constantly drinks a lot and he showed signs of being ready to eat, so he's eating!

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
Well, this is our schedule -
Sometime between 6 & 7AM he nurses 8AM fruit 10ish nurses 12PM 1.5oz BM to 3 tblspns cereal (oatmeal) I try really hard to get him to nurse again around 1, but he's usually full. 3or4PM nurses 6PM 2.25 oz BM to 4 tblspns cereal w/ fruit 7:30 nurses - bedtime
Marissa - he's been on cereal since 12 weeks (he's 17 now and about 16.5lbs) and in the last 2 weeks he's been waking up every 2-3 hours also STARVING. But he doesn't nurse very well during the day. I have to talk to my pedi about that on Thurs at his well visit.

Re: I cant figure my little guy out...
Thanks everyone....we tried it tonight...he seemed to like it, and at least half stayed in his mouth
Pending on his mood in the morning, I will decide to do cereal before I leave or in the afternoon...
Here are some pics:

Re: I cant figure my... UPDATE WITH PICS
Marissa I think your schedule looks fine. You might be able to get the 8pm bottle in him a little early if you make it part of your nighttime routine. With my daughter she has dinner. We play for about a half hour and then start our nighttime routine and a 30-45 mins later she will take a 4-6 bottle. It's always been like that since we started introducing cereal.
Good luck with it and take lots of pictures!

Yes, he was already going 4 hrs between feedings at that time. He started that pretty early on...around 7 weeks or so. He just started getting hungry later and later on his own. If Ryan wasn't already going longer between feedings, the cereal will definitely keep him full longer.
Btw, glad to hear it went well! He looks so cute in his high chair!
