Maternity Leave for Adoption
Ladies,
What do your companies do for you in terms of maternity leave when it comes to adoption? I'm interested in seeing other people's plans. I am starting a new job on Monday so I'm unsure of their plan, if any.
TIA, Susan

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
My company does 13 weeks paid(if you are here a year) that includes the timeoff to travel if needed.
Less then a year you get 6 weeks paid.

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
My old job gave people the same as maternity leave, so 12 weeks FMLA, I think at about 80% pay. You had to forfit half your banked sick and vacation time. If you had to travel ahead of time you had to use vacation or cut into this time.
Also, you had to be there at least a year to qualify, otherwise I think you got nothing.

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
Wow, really interesting how much this varies from company to company. My new job is at a nonprofit and I will be there less than a year when I get my baby, so I doubt I'll get anything. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
Most companies do not have adoption leave policies that include pay. It is unfair, but you have to remember that our paid maternity leave "benefits" in the US have NOTHING to do with caring for a newborn. They are given so you can recovery for the physical condition of pregnancy and birth. FLMA does apply, but is unpaid.

I get $ towards the adoption as well from my company, $3,000. And don't forget the tax credit of $10,000+ we get if you don't make over $160,000+.

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
My husband's company is giving us $15K towards the adoption...and it does not have to be completed. They are giving it to us as we spend it. It is the BEST perk at his job! He also gets one week of paid leave to care for a new baby.

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
Often those lists are a bit out of date. Computer Associates also has a "gift" of $8K so you don't even get taxed on it.
Plus in most companies you need to work there for 1 year before using an adoption benefits. If you work for a rather decent sized company you can request that they begin a program for adoption benefits. My friend did this at CA for "adoption leave" so she could get benefits during her leave just like pregnant moms. So you can help your company see why these benefits are good for everyone.

Re: Maternity Leave for Adoption
My company gives (I believe) $5000 towards adoptions plus 6 weeks off. I get 12 weeks for maternity leave, fathers get 4 weeks.
