Lots of excellent ideas. I do wonder what was being done prior to the hurricane to help the residents of the region, since poverty had been a problem for so long. I guess it's good that there hadn't been more development, because it would have been destroyed. But I think many of the initiatives can and should be looked into further, to see if they will be effective in the other poverty-stricken areas of the country.

Re: Ok, I'll bring it up... Bush's address last night...

I don't even want to read it.. I am SPITTING mad at the fact that even after the Halliburton drama of Iraq that Halliburton was ONCE AGAIN awarded a no-bid contract- this time in New Orleans to clean up!!! So far, they are the ONLY company that has a contract to do work in New Orleans.
It saddens me- that our government that we elected gets away with this type of behavior and we (the people) do nothing about it. Lets face it- most people in this country don't even trouble themselves to read the paper.... and yet- we are getting taken advantage of! In the end- this type of corporate cronyism affects everyone in our pocketbooks... and it really takes away what living in a democracy is about too Chat Icon

What?
Pay for things?
That doesn't matter! Why would he start concerning himself about that now! He didn't with Iraq, why New Orleans? I'm sure he'll just lower taxes, again- as some sort of weird way of justifying spending money- that way our government really falls apart and his friends can get what they REALLY want- the end of all social programs in America b/c we can't pay for them...

I am NOT a Bush fan, but I must say that this was probably the best speech he has ever given since he's been in office. They must have had the telepromter at the right speed bc he didn't do his normal pause after 4 words.

Re: Ok, I'll bring it up... Bush's address last night...

he's getting the money by increasing the deficit. Experts are predicting $200billion defecit when all is said and done.

And p.s. - did anyone else notice that his shirt was buttoned wrong? Chat Icon he must've skipped a button hole at the bottom, and it only got worse as he went up. I know he was trying to be "blue collar" - but we would've gotten that, even if the shirt WASN'T actually BLUE!

Very well put.

I barely listened to it because I just find him to be such a robot. Nothing he says ever seems heartfelt or sincere.

Re: Ok, I'll bring it up... Bush's address last night...

I didn't watch it, but read the transript on the link posted.

If the purpose was to raise spirits, then it sounded like a good speech. If the purpose was to describe what is/will be done, I think it lacks substance - I would like to hear numbers. How many doctors and nurses are being sent, how many houses of worship are accepting people, how much money is being paid out by SS? Perhaps a 20 minute speech is not enough time to cover all of these things, but I think he could have put a little more meat in there.

The one thing that really got me was the statement that "more people will own their houses, instead of rent them." I'd like to see that change nationwide, not just on the rebuilt gulf coast.
