What are the first steps?
I'm open to adopting if we need to. DH is still not sure, but I'd like to do my research.
What are the first steps? What are some good sites / agencies to get information ?

Re: What are the first steps?
I would first determine which countries you are interested in considering; financially - what are you willing/able to spend, or is $ not an issue; do you want an agency locally (close to your home area) or it does not matter, the countries you are interested in may have restriction, which might disqualify you from that country, do you want an an infant/toddler, an older child, or a child w/ special needs...
there are a lot of issues to consider. I just read and read and read some more and then talked to people, and one conversation led me to another person who lead us to where we are today.
Hope this helps?

Re: What are the first steps?
The internet is a great informational tool when first starting out. Then there's also great books including "Adoption for Dummies" which I found to focus mostly on domestic adoptions.
The first thing I would figure out is if domestic or international is better for you. If you decide on international, the next step would be to research different countries and which one fits your family the best. From there, I'd research which agencies offer the best programs for the adoption you've chosen. Then of course there's tons of forums which I've found to be the best source of info.
Check out www.adoption.com to start off. If you have any questions, just let us know! Good Luck!

Thats exactly what we did.
Once we decided on international we attended a information meeting held by Spence Chapin . Since they have programs in many countries they provide a good overview. If you are the networking type you may want to attend meetings at Adoptive Parents Committee.
Research reasearch research its so important to go into this with as much knowledge as possible.
Best of Luck to you - I hope we will be hearing more from you soon.

Re: What are the first steps?
Part of what is important is really talking to your DH to discuss what he would be open to...is he open at all to International Adoption, or only domestic, same-race, same-religion adoption? You can also consider taking a few books out of the library about adoption. There are social workers at the agency that you and your DH may wish to talk to about adoption. They can help you decide what country or if adoption is a good option for you and your DH. If I can help in any way please let me know.
