Does Anyone Belong to a Beach Club- Should we keep it?
Hi there -
I was just wondering if anyone belongs to a beach club? MY DH's family has been a member of one on Atlantic Beach for years and years and we have been going as guests ($30 a day) since we have been dating.
Now that DH's FIL has passed away (MIL is deceased too), we are trying to decide if we should keep it or not. We don't have to decide until January, but we think about it a lot.
I am looking for outside opinions!
Here is some background info to help you help me!
Details of the beach club: -we have our own private cabana with a shower, kitchenette, sleeping area -kiddie pool and regular pool, as well as the beach of course -summer camp for kids -clubhouse -game room -cafeteria -outside deck restaurant -indoor bar -cabana boys and girls to uload your car, bring your stuff to the cabana and even set our chairs up on the beach.
Costs: We have the cheapest cabana and it's $6,000 for the summer plus cabana person tips which come out to another $400.
Here are some other points: - Can we afford it? Yes, but not sure that is where we want to spend that money. -Time - it would be great if I was a teacher or a SAHM, but I am not so we only really go on the weekends. BUT - it would be great for when we do have kids (hopefully soon) and I might be a SAHM someday. -If we give it up and want it back the waiting list is years long...

I would keep it for 1 year and see if you like it.
I just did quick math and if you use it for 3 months all summer, it comes out to roughly $500 a weekend that's a lot. it sounds great though!
my friend's parents used to own a cabana and invited me pretty often. I remember really enjoying it.

I agree. Keep it for at least a year and see how much you use it and if it is worth it for you.
For the waiting list to be years long I think it must be really worth it!!

I think that if you could afford it, then keep it...like you said, the waiting list is LONG and it would be great for when you have children.

Agree with this. i would keep it for a year & see how many times you use it! By then, your SAHM status might change

I'm not sure I'd keep it. 6K could be a really nice vacation every year and you'd be seeing a diff. part of the world along with it. Or you could put in your own pool after a few years of saving that 6K. Or as my husband would say, that could be season tickets to the Mets. But I think I'd at least keep it for the first year just to gage how much I like it. Though I think I'd get bored of it after a short while. Sounds great for kids though.

It's hard to let go of that. Those cabanas have waiting lists!

Re: Does Anyone Belong to a Beach Club- Should we keep it?
My aunt owns a cabana just like that and I used to go there a lot when I was younger.
In terms of friendships/kids, etc. it was awesome. I really always enjoyed that and wish I could find something like that in Jersey!
A friend of mine is considering selling his and told me that they may sublet it for one year to see if they really miss it. If they don't, they will sell. If they DO miss it, well, then they won't. Can you check and see if that is possible?
Otherwise, as long as you can afford it, I would keep doing it.

Re: Does Anyone Belong to a Beach Club- Should we keep it?
If I were at the beach every weekend in the summer, I would keep it. I think it would be worth it to me to not have to lug my stuff there every time I go.
I agree with those who said keep it for a year or two and see if you use it.
i also know someone who shares hers with another family to cut down on the expense.

Re: Does Anyone Belong to a Beach Club- Should we keep it?
I would want to keep it - but $6000 is a lot to just use it on weekends.
On a side note - where are their beach clubs on LI? My FH belonged to one growing up and he loved it. I think it is great for kids and SAHMs but I just dont think i could justify that kind of expense without using it for a good portion of the summer.....

I think it's great for kids because the cost of summer camp is huge! Maybe you can share it with another couple or family?

Is it sunny atlantic beach club? My family goes there.
If you can afford it and you think you will go there a lot, then I would keep it for a year. If not then....I would get rid of it

Re: Does Anyone Belong to a Beach Club- Should we keep it?
My SIL has one in Atlantic Beach as well - she went in on it with 2 other families so they split their days/weekends. Sometimes there's overlap, sometimes there isn't. Maybe going in on it with another couple or family might be a workable option.
If you are someone who goes to the beach every day, then go for it. If not, I would think twice about it and what that $6400 a year could get you
Good luck!

i agree on all accounts- i'd probably get bored quickly too. But, i think its worth keeping for a year.
I'd probably go in on it with someone who could use it during the week- and was Clean.

There are a ton on Atlantic Beach. I didnt know they existed until I went with a classmate in highschool.
The funniest thing is that my DH was her cabana boy back in the day! Who knows - I could have met him years and years ago and never knew it!
