Goodwill - shelter - free goods

I currently have a sofa sleeper that I need to get rid of. I don't want to sell it and I don't want the garbage men to take it.

Last year I had a garage sale and at the end of the day a women came asking for household items (she runs a program to help people get back on their feet). Then another time we had a chair and small sofa outside on the curb, hoping someone would pick it up. Another women came and took them, she ran a house for battered women.

Does anyone know places like this, I don't want to stuff to be sold after they pick it up (exp: salvation army)?

thanks!

Call The Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN.) They set-up homes for formerly homeless families and DO NOT resell the furniture. (516)486-8506, they pick-up too.

Re: Goodwill - shelter - free goods

I would recommend the INN too, but I wanted to tell you that sometimes social service agencies are very picky about what they will take. I was in a volunteer program for a few years, involved with people who did shelter and group home work and there were strict guidelines about what they were permitted to have in the houses. the stuff really ahs to be in great condition. So I just wanted to say that if you do have someone come and look at it and they don't take it, don't be offended. Chat Icon

If you don't mind my asking, why would it bother you if Salvation Army sold it? the money they make goes into their programs to help people get back on their feet too.

Just looking for the "smaller" organizations - I don't mind that the S.Army sells the items to make money for their programs, I just want the stuff I'm donating not to be sold. I could have a garage sale and sell it at that. Right now I want to give it to someone or someplace that really needs it.

did you ever hear of freecycle? It's a yahoo message board where you can give things away to people that need them, and you may even find something on there that you need. I have gotten a playpen and now a push-tricycle - and have given away a bunch of things. It's a cool sight.

Freecycle is good - I have also used craigslist.com and posted it as "free" stuff.

Re: Goodwill - shelter - free goods

I also go on Freecycle, but I think there are a lot of people on there who re-sell stuff too.
