Which would you prefer with regards to you FIRST home purchase?
1. if your fh/dh/so was not present for closing on your home and you had power of attorney
2. fh/dh/so gets slack at work for missing an important business trip to attend the closing
imho, think being at the closing is important for your first home, but hes getting ALOT of slack from partners about missing this business trip
eta- this is NOT my dilemma- mine took off from work for our closing last year- but im asking for my co-worker

I would want DH with me. Could I do it alone? Probably. Would I want to? No. Especially if it was our first home together.

DH does all that stuff, on his own. I just pack and label boxes. Its much easier that way, for both of us.

I think for a first home purchase, since its a huge financial situation and purchase made by both husband and wife, I would want my SO to be there

Of course I would want my DH there especially on our first home, but if work is more important (sounds like it might be), I would encourage him to go on his business trip & I would handle the closing...
Sometimes, work MUST come first!!!

Depending on how long he has been working there, and how secure his job is, I'd try to make it to the closing. I see it as one of those really important milestones in life.

if Jake wasn't a mortgage broker I would be ok with it
but since he knows way more then I do - I would want him to be there
but if he had a closing on some ones elses mortgage- I would want him to go there and not ruin any deals

I actually did it alone. My DH was away for work, so I got power of attorney for him.
It really did not matter to me at all...our lawyer is our friend, so I really did not feel like I was there alone, and we were not getting the keys that day so it is not like we could have gone to the house after. But even so, I don't see a big deal in going alone.

i agree. especially w/ all the monthly mortgage payments and all the bills that will follow the closing. can't risk losing his job now.

I agree also. You can't risk loosing your job when you purchase a home...how on earth will you be able to afford it now

I would do it alone. I really don't think it is that much of a milestone. You have an attorney in NY he will explain everything to you. I mean the house is a milestone but not the closing.
