Removing a big tree in backyard - Questions

I am meeting with somebody this weekend about removing two large trees in my backyard.

Is there anything I should ask him in particular? What should I expect upon removing these two large trees? I obviously want him to remove the stump/root/etc. Am I going to have two large craters in my backyard afterwards?

If so... how do I go about filling them?

This guy is coming to me recommended... but I wouldn't even begin to know what to ask this guy.

Re: Removing a big tree in backyard - Questions

Is he grinding the stump down or is he pulling it out entirely. Also, will he fill the holes, put in new topsoil, sod or seed?
How much will it cost?
What will he do if the soil sinks/settles? will he come back and refill it?

Ok... what are the "answers" that I should look for. After this thing is out... what am I supposed to do?

Does it matter if he grinds or if he pulls the roots out? My guess is he will have to grind since the backyard is small and I don't think he will be able to get really large equipment back there due to my carport.

i believe grinding is the more standard option, getting at the roots would be $$$$.

how will they be taking down the trees? we had a huge tree removed from our front yard in record time with a cherry picker.

find out what they plan to do with the debris. will they mulch and carry it away? will they chop the remains for firewood if you want/need it?

the company we selected came recommended as well, but we asked for insurance info to make sure everything was legit.

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure what they will do with the remains. Gotta see.

When we had trees removed, my landscaper ground down the stump and left a mound of the mulch there. What happens is over time the roots will deteriorate and the ground will sink. He said we should wait a year for him to come back and seed the area, otherwise it will sink in and we'd have to fill and re-seed the area again. My mom's landscaper did the same thing when she had a tree removed in her front yard.

Yeah... so you are saying if I ever wanted to put a pool back there.... I should definitely wait at least a year for the ground to settle before I consider a pool.

These two trees take up a good part of my backyard. Talking about the two trees on the sides of the picture. Not sure what I will do with the really tiny one in the back.

This is an idea on how tall they are. Granted its now the winter and they don't look as "intiminating" with all their leaves off.

I *think* that even with an above ground pool they dig down a little to put in some of the supports and put down the layer of sand that protects the liner from rocks, so you might be able to put one in before. We removed an old above ground pool from our backyard and had to dig up these huge metal supports that ran under the pool. You'd have to ask the pool people to be sure.

Re: Removing a big tree in backyard - Questions

Well... the pool probably isn't happening this summer anyways due to lack of funds. Too many other "higher priority" projects to work on. So its probably better that I wait that out to see how the ground settles.

But I do want those two trees out of here.

Re: Removing a big tree in backyard - Questions

I just had a HUGE pine tree removed from my backyard two weeks ago. They grinded the stump. There isn't a hole in the ground, but they did leave alot of woodchips behind. We will be cleaning the wood chips out and need to level the ground with more dirt. It definately opened up my backyard more. Took awhile to get used to it, but I will be getting alot more sun. Good luck!

Well the guy came today... we agreed on a price... and he started working an hour later.

Both trees are gone now. He is coming back to grind the stumps tomorrow.

There are woodchips everywhere. Anyone have any good cleaning ideas? Chat Icon

LIBOUND: Yeah that tree is bigger than mine. If I had a tree in front of my property... i wouldn't bother me as much. But mine were in my backyard. They had to go. Chat Icon

We now have a ton of woodchips back there. In March or April we will go to phase two and work on the landscaping back there.

I paid $800 buks to have the guy take down both trees. He was pretty cheap and was recommended to me by one of my wife's co-workers.

If anyone wants to call them... ask for Jose and tell him Richard gave you the number. 516-486-1088

Re: Removing a big tree in backyard - Questions

I don't think Suffolk would be an issue. They seem like the type of people that would "work with you" if you know what I mean.

I guess you can ask and see what they say.

Oh one other thing... they brought a big dump truck and carted all the small braches away. That was good that I didnt have to deal with it.

They took the bigger stumps to sell for firewood i guess.
