Those who are doing/did home improvements... question...

Did you have the $ to do the improvements saved or did you take out a loan? If a loan, what kind?

We had money saved but rather than taking the money out of our savings account. We put everything on American Express to get points then transferred the balance to a 0% interest cc. Now we pay off $500 a month. We used the cc as a loan with no interest. It kept our money in the bank and if something happens we can always pay it off but for now it works as a no interest loan for us.

We're in the beginning stages of buying, but have plans to extend the apartment we're buying. We think we're going to do the same.

That's EXACTLY what we did. We had the money but we wanted to keep it in savings for emergency, so we put everything on an American Express card and then transferred it to a zero interest credit card. We paid $1000 a month into the card and had it paid off within a year. We also did this when we bought my car - we used a zero interest CC and have been paying it off slowly through the year so we don't have to pay exorbitant interest rates by financing.

All our home improvements have been done with cash. We save until we have ebnnough to do that particular project. We do not have a penny in debt for anything, except our mortgage. I guess that's why its taken 5 years to get the house to where it is today!

We are in the process of doing the same thing - Except we got 1% not zero..... Its good for now and eventually we can transfer it if we get a zero % card..
