Feeding question for moms Sept/Oct Moms

What table foods and finger foods are you giving your babies?

Emily is really not digging the mushy stuff lately! So we've been giving her some of our food cut up very small but it's not enough I feel, it's really just a little bit...

so I'm looking for suggestions. Is it too early to start Stage 3? She doesn't have any teeth.

I really can't be of help because I have a "gagger". Antonio is 8 months but he cannot handle any texture. He is still on stage 2 and has no desire for our table food. I tried to give him a little piece of white bread and he started gagging. I tried some chicken-gag, he even gas with the puffs. I have a feeling it's going to be a while.

I have heard many moms saying not to bother with stage 3 just grind up table food. They say it's a wierd consistency.

I read that white bread gets really gummy when you give it to them and it gets thier saliva all over it and so it's better to give a grain bread or to toast the white bread. We toast white bread really dark and give Emily that to chew on and she loves it --- also toast frozen bagels and give her a half to chew on. I find big chunks break off less when toasted rather then frozen. You might want to try that instead of plain white bread and also it acts as a good teether!

I will try but I don't think it's that I think he is just lazy to chew! He seals those lips so tight when I try to put a 1/4 piece of puff inside his mouth and when I do get it in he acts as if I squezzed lemon on his tongue!

But we finally have tooth as of yesterday so maybe things will changeChat Icon

WIth your daughter I would just put table food in the blender she sounds like she is not a picky eater! HAve fun...

Joseph doesn't really put the food in his own mouth yet. I try to give him the puffs - he'll eat them but I put them in. I put his cereal on the tray and he just mushes it up. He picks little pieces up, but funnily enough, the stuff he CAN put in his mouth he doesn't. Now, if paper, dog hair and dirt was nutritious he'd be one big tubby baby!Chat Icon

I would like to hear what everyone else is giving by way of "people" food...

See, Emily does seem like a picky eater to me because she used to eat more things and now she refuses a lot of them. She never liked green veggies but loved squash and sweet potatoes and doesn't eat them much anymore -- she basically only likes things with bananas -- yet I can get her to eat real cooked carrots cut up small and avacados and stuff like that. I think I need to get a minifood processor or the baby food mill from onestepahead because I can't imagine using the blender daily to make just a few ounces of food being that it's so messy to clean. I guess I'm looking for more ideas for fingerfoods that I don't have to blend or anything like that but can just give her bits of.

ETA that Emily does eat the fruit puffs and LOVES them although only half of them make it into her mouth -- the other half are usually under her butt when I pick her up from the high chair!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh no! I haven't given any table food! No puffs, nothing. We're still doing the Stage 2 foods, which she loves. My doctor didn't seem to think we needed to start "food" yet. She said most babies are ready by 9-10 mos, but we could start if we really wanted to.

Katherine doesn't have any teeth, so I guess I'm kind of worried about choking.

I have tried the sippy cup with water, but I don't think she's really drinking anything.

I have given Hayley the fruit puffs from Gerber. She can't put them in her mouth, I have to give them to her. No table food yet...although I gave her a taste of whipped cream from my cake last week...she loved it!

None because as soon as I tried a stage 3 oatmeal and fruit breakfast she gagged. The only thing I have given her was that bagel to **** on.

I know JCNDD's Dr. told her she could give it to Joseph- so after I read that- I decided to give Ryan a little...only vanilla!!!!

I figured he does well with the yogurt- so why not try it...He does great with it.. and LOVES IT!!!!

I'm actually so bad because on Saturdays when we go to the park to play on the swings (thats been our routine for a few weeks now but I don't think we'll be doing it tomorrow with the rain!) we always get the ice cream man before we leave and I give her vanilla ice cream. I read you aren't supposed to get them used to something with that much sugar added at such a young age but she really loves it and it's so cute!!!

Alex grabs at everything I put in my mouth! I didn't think we were supposed to give them real food this early, but she does have 4 teeth already so DH and I have been experimenting a little here and there. We give her carrots, string beans, bananas, apples, sweet potatoes. Really, just any fruit or veggie we eat for that day, but mushed up. She absolutely LOOOOOVES it. If I give her a carrot she starts biting down on it and puts little teeth marks all over it! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My son is almost 9 months and he's still eating stage 2, only b/c stage 3 grosses me out. He looooooooooves puffs. He starts flailing his arms when he sees them coming! Chat Icon He's also just starting to like cheerios.

He eats Yo Baby yogurt, egg yolk scrambled w/ cheese, mashed potatoes and I just bought some pastina which I'll probably make tonight.(DS #1 loved this w/ butter - but what a mess!!!). Chat Icon

Re: Feeding question for moms Sept/Oct Moms

When you start introducing more foods for meals such as the pastina or mashed potatoes do you cut out on the cereal/fruit? I know the cereal is fortified with iron so it is very important.

He still has cereal once a day - either for breakfast or lunch. I stopped giving #1 cereal at about 1 year and plan to do the same with this one. I always make sure he has at least 5 servings of fruit and veggies each day.

Re: Feeding question for moms Sept/Oct Moms

I was thinking of keeping breakfast and lunch the same and just giving her table food and also hopefully my husband is buying a food mill today -- I sent him the link (he has the credit card) and then I'll give us mashed up versions of our dinner -- which the dr did OK for us at 6 months.

Re: Feeding question for moms Sept/Oct Moms

This is just IMHO. I don't think you need a food mill at this age. She quite possibly is ready for more and more table food. Gianni is eatting whatever I give him, cut up banana, puffs, carrots, potatoes. I just make sure it's soft and cut it up small as his pinky nail. We will be trying rice and pasta soon. Gabriella was the same way and ate table food early. I'd try Stage 3 and see how it goes, slowly.

Sorry, I don't have a lot of time to write now. Chat Icon Feel free to ask me anything though. Chat Icon
