Name the things you do/did that were purely selfless acts.

Probably volunteering for a summer to work at an orphanage in Mexico probably ranks as my best. The one little girl (about 2 years old) that never spoke one word to me and was referred to as "Fea"(ugly) would sit next to me all of the time. I tell her that she was the most beautiful of all of the children. The last day she was sitting in my lap singing that she was the most beautiful. It was probably one of my best days.

Little things:
- I sometimes put money in the meter for someone who I did not know
- donated blood
- give to church/charities
- I do little thing s for DH that I know he likes and does not expect from me.
- DH & I spent one Thanksgiving giving hot meals to elderly people; it was one of the best holidays we spent together. Chat Icon

Big Stuff:
- Taking care of my mother's finances for four years and being her power of attorney (my mom is 55 years old and very sick).
- Signing my mom into a nursing/adult home because I had power of attorney. She fought me on this and it was so difficult (I say this is selfless because it was the hardest thing I ever had to do and it was the best decision for HER, not me although her mind is too messed up to see that. Chat Icon) There is a ton of little stuff I do for her as well that she does not know about.
- I pray for people on this board (who I don't really know), for friends and family all the time.

I've done a lot, including being in a full time volunteer program for 2 years after college. I think my favorite moment, however, was giving these 2 little girls (about 9 years old) in my deli a dollar when they didn't have enough to pay. Chat Icon

I donate blood. I also once paid someone's bud fare when they didn't have enough money. I regularly give to charity- esp. the American Cancer Assoc.

dh and I will buy food for homeless people when we go to a certain deli out east. If we see someone waiting for the bus and it's cold out we will ask if they need a ride. I take public transportation a lot and if someone is short of change or money I will pay their fare.

Re: Ok do gooders...What's your best altruistic moment?

For 5 years I volunteered in my local hospital (over 700 hours).
When I was living in Washington, DC I was walking to the gym from work and I saw a man having a heart attack, so I stopped, gave him CPR and called 911. He lived - I called to see if he was ok the next day and spoke with a nurse who told me he was alive and ok. That was the best feeling in the world.
I put $ in expired meters for people tooChat Icon
I sometimes give $ to charity, but I always feel like I should give more.
I do Chat Icon when people on the board ask for them.

Re: Ok do gooders...What's your best altruistic moment?

I honestly can say what I have done is small in comparison to what I can do...

--I have donated blood
--before I got ez-pass I liked to pay the toll of the person behind me...my sister thought I was nuts until she did it with me one time and realized how good it made you feel.

--and it may not be the most altruistic; I have somewhat kissed and made up with my SIL, who has been nothing but horrendous to me, for the benefit of my DH, my daughter, and my MIL...I personally had to swallow a lot of horrid things attacking me personally and who physically makes my blood boil...

Re: Ok do gooders...What's your best altruistic moment?

When I lived downtown, every Sunday I would go to the bagel shop, get a bagel for myself and buy a few extras and give them to the homeless in the park next to the apartment. After a few times in which a homeless person would chase me out of the park screaming at me, I opted to leave them on a park bench or in a garbage can for someone to find Chat Icon

Once a month I do a legal "freebie" for a friend or someone I don't know. Just to remember why I got into the legal profession in the first place.

Adopted my doggy - a 9 year old little chihuahua who was shaky, greasy, flaky and rather ugly, at the pound, even though I wanted a young golden retreiver. We decided to rescue a dog that would likely be put down soon. I also rescued my cat from imminent death.

I volunteered for Habitat for humanity a few times. Used to tutor disadvantaged children in Philadelphia, and once a month, before I had my daughter, I used to organize a volunteer activity for friends and co-workers. Now we belong to the jewish federation in Philadelphia and we contribute money and as well, meet once a month with other federation couples and do a volunteer event with them (i.e. bringing food to the elderly immigrants in northeast philly). And, I used to volunteer at a hospital in College. That was HARD.

Re: Ok do gooders...What's your best altruistic moment?

I've donated blood, donated my hair to locks of love, and helped clean with KIC (Keep Islip Clean) for many years.
