on Baby story .... repost-

they always show the doctor throwing the baby onto the mothers chest as soon as he/she is born so this is what i am expecting. but when i talked to my last 2 friends that gave birth, they said the doctor didn't do that, they took the baby to get cleaned up and it was like 30 mins after before they got to see their little one.

did everyone get to hold their baby instantly??

When I had my baby they did that, as soon as he was born they gave him to me with the cord still attached. He felt so soft and lovely, like he had just had a long 42 week bath.

I was all googly eyed (probably from the epidural) but I kept saying...yer so cute, yer so cute.

I totally had the impression that they would let me at least hold my baby even though I had a csection because I have seen it happening on the baby story. I was so wrong. They wrapped her up after what seemed like 20 minutes of cleaning her off (It was probably more like 5) and handed her to my husband just for a few minutes. Then they brought me to recovery and I just had to lay there for hours waiting for a room.

To make matters worse she had some breathing difficulties so I ended up not seeing my baby for the first 24 hours and only getting to hold her for maybe 2-3 minutes (they took her out of oxygen so I could at least hold her) the next day.

I know that next time, c-sectoin or not, I am going to demand that I hold my baby or that they at least bring him/her very close to me or let my husband hold the baby close to me. I think if you don't make things VERY clear they just do it thier own way because it is easier. I told my sister to make a fuss about it and she felt silly but she was holding her baby right after it was born.

I got to hold Andrew before the cleanup, etc. I don't know if it was immediate. I remember them holding him up and then within a few minutes, he was in my arms. But then they whisked him away and I didn't see him again until I got settled in my room.

Racheee -- you are in England right? I think the process is so different in England. We were talking about it in Lamaze. How they favor a more natural approach as far as birthing positions and also let you hold the baby and nurse if you want to right afterwards whereas that is less common here.

Both of my children were cleaned up after they showed them to me. I dont' think it was 30 minutes though. I didn't really notice the time. I know it's very natural, new age type of thing but I'm not sure I wanted a slippery, bloody baby on me as I was being stitched up.


Thats so funny, because I was holding the baby while they were stitching me up, I don't remember being stitched up one bit! It was a great distractor!

Really!!! Yeah, its all very natural, the midwives encourage us to sort of do what we feel good doing, ie if we want to lay on our side and push we can do etc, also we have the choice to have a home birth, thats really popular...but the clean up, oy! Its all really hands off pregnancy care here, which is fantastic. I never once saw a doctor the whole of my 42 weeks, we don't have any tests except for the AFP (if we want it) and they encourage us to nurse the baby right away.

So what happens to you after you give birth???
Do they take the baby away?
We take the baby upstairs to the ward with us in the wheelchair.

See! That is so much more like what I would have wanted. Granted I had a c-section because she was HUGE --- and I'm glad about that in the long run, but it made me so depressed that I wasn't able to hold and see my baby right away. The girl that I shared the room with had her baby brought in all night and in the entire 4 days I was in the hospital Emily never left the NICU -- It was a sad process for me.

Also I've heard that the maternity leave in England is way better. I got 8 weeks unpaid. What do you get over there?


It was lovely to hold Noah right away, he was all squidgey!!! We get good statuatory maternity pay from the government, so for me I got 6 weeks unpaid leave at 90% of my regular pay (remember we also get 5 weeks holiday a year, of which I had 2 weeks left over so I got an extra 2 weeks off) then after that we get SMP which is £106 per week (thats like $175) for 20 weeks, after that we are entitled to another 6 months off, in that time companies are legally obliged to hold your job for you but those are unpaid. ALSO...you accrue your 5 weeks holiday, so you can either get the cash for those, or take an extra 5 weeks paid on the end of your maternity leave (thats pro rata depending on how long you have off) So yes, its pretty good. ALSO, we get £250 for your child when its born (its to invest only) and I collect Child Benefit from the government which is something like £68 (around $125 a month) forever...so yes, all in all its pretty good.

Like Rachel, as soon as my son was born, the doc put him on my chest He was so warm. DH and I got to look at him, kiss him, then DH cut the cord and then they took him to get cleaned. Then they brought him right back to me and we got to spend about 45 minutes with him. They were awesome at LIJ and allowed all my family to come see him and hold him in the labor and delivery room since he was born at 5:59 and visiting hours were almost over.

When she first came out they held her next to my face for a minute, then took her away to clean her. Then they gave her to my mom while I was getting stitched up.

She was born, they cleaned her up, DH held her briefly and then they gave her to me to hold while they stiched me up. Then I went to recovery and she went to the nursery. They brought her to me again once I was settled in my room in the maternity ward.

My girlfriend just had her 2nd via c-section at NS Manhasset and they have a new policy where they clean up the baby and then you are with it for an hour, vaginal or c-section (assuming no complications) which she was surprised by. She held the baby while they rolled her into recovery.

I was also expecting to hold Luka when he was born but DH said that his ambical cord was very short so it wasnt long enough to put on my stomach. The doctor had a difficult time clamping it so when she did cut it they took the baby and immediatly my doctor had me push the placenta out which took about 10 min. They gave him to DH and he got to hold him from the afterbirth until I was stiched up. He did show me him inbetween and I was able to take a picture with him and kiss him before she was stiching. The next time I would love to have them put the baby on my stomach.

My baby was put on my chest immediatly ... at that moment DH cut the umbilical cord and I delivered the placenta. After a while, they took him to be cleaned.

My 1st was given to me immediately - all yucky. My 2nd had the cord wrapped around his neck and my OB had to massage him to get his 1st breath - then the nurse took him. DH got to cut the cord for both boys.

He wasn't placed on my belly.....My DSs heart rate dropped a few times while I was pushing (I was on Oxygen and they kept putting me on my left side to breathe) so when he was born they took him over to the table so the ped. could check him out. He was fine so he was in my arms in a matter of minutes

When I gave birth they showed me my daughter and then cleaned her up right next to me so I was able to see her and watch her it wasn't that long that they gave her to me and while that was going on the dr. stictched me up and I didn't even notice.

yes, the dr put her on my chest right after she came out.. umb. chord still attached. i held her for a few minutes, then they took her to clean her up!!

They cleaned her up in front of me, then showed her to me while I was put back together Then the nurse "drove" my bed past her in the nursery, and FINALLY I got to hold her

She was put up on my chest also. Came out surprisingly clean...not all gunky like on tv. I actually told the nurses to take her and suction her because I heard her breathing was congested.......
