Anyone's family live out of state?
If so, how soon after the baby arrives are they coming to visit? This is a hard one for me, because my family lives far away, DH's family is on LI. I know my mom wants to be here when the baby is born, but since she lives out of state that means she would be staying with us. I love my mom and I want her to be there, but I think it is important the DH and I have time to bond as a family with the baby before we have house guests.
Is anyone else going through this type of situation?

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
Yes! My parents live in New Jersey and my husband's are in North Carolina. We both would like to spend alone time with the baby for the first few days, but his mother already told me she's driving up as soon as I go into labor! This is a tricky situation, I agree. We won't have a spare bedroom, so will our parents assume they have to stay at a hotel?

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
yes!
we are in jersey and both our parents live in upstate NY (DH's are 3 hours away, mine 6).
as of now the plan is to call my parents when labor is official and they will jump in the car and drive down. i don't want DH's parents around until a few days have passed, i don't know if that will fly or not with DH.
my mother will stay with us a couple weeks after to help out. she figures if she comes down earlier we will get sick of each other. but, if i need her for any reason she will be here...

My immediate family lives here, but the majority of my aunts, uncles, and cousins live out of state. Most of them haven't seen Christopher yet.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
My MIL lives in Ohio and already told me she would like to be here when the baby is born. Not sure if can deal with that. Plus we aren't sure where we will be living then (we are in the begining stages of remodeling our house). My FIL is in NC and also said he wants to be up then as well.... I agree, i would like some alone time with my DH & new baby. it'll be an intersting time.
at least we all have each other to vent, if needed...
congrates everyone!

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
I am in NJ and my parents are on LI...DH's parents are in FL.
I expect my parents to get in the car as soon as they hear I'm in labor...as for staying with us, I really didn't give it any thought....I don't think DH's parents will travel for the birth. Since I'm due in Oct, and we usually see DH's parents for Thanksgiving in Nov..I bet that's when we will see them.

I am in CT and our whole family still lives on LI. DH's parents and my parents are coming up as soon as go into labor, and staying for a couple days. My brother and his wife took off a week in may to come help, no clue what his sister is doing.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
My mother is in Arizona, my Father is in Florida and my inlaws are in Ohio. I don't think anyone will be in for the delivery itself. I'm due 5/16. My Mom is talking about coming in June and I think MIL will come sometime after she leaves. I agree with you about wanting to have some time to bond as a family and get into your groove with each other b4 there is company, but I also think it would be nice to have my mom there when the baby is born, but I guess you can't have it both ways. The problem with trying to have people here for delivery is you just never know when you'll go into labor.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
I live in Chicago and my family is in NY. My due date was May 25 and the doctor told me that she would definitely induce on June 1st if I didn't have the baby by then. My mom planned on staying for two weeks. So to have as much help after the baby was born she came on May 30. I went into labor on May 31 and my son was born on June 1st. My father and brothers came 10 days later and they all flew back to NY together 4 days later.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
We're in CO, my parents are in NY, and his are in AL. I don't know how we're going to work who comes when. All I know is that my parents will come first and stay for a couple of weeks because they're both retired. I'm guessing that right after the baby is born, they'll book plane tickets out here instead of coming before the baby is born and just sitting around waiting.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
My Mom is out of state about 9 hours away. She drives here when she comes to visit since she doesn't like to fly. So the plan for us is, she'll be packed and ready when its close to my EDD and once I go into labor she'll start driving up a day or two later to give us some time alone.

Re: Anyone's family live out of state?
My husband's family is out of state in MA, about 3.5 hours away. I told him that I did not want guests in my home when I came home from the hospitals. His mother does not drive, but his brother and both of his sisters do drive. I made it clear that they were more than welcome to come, but not stay in my home during that time. I am sure words were said about that, but I put me as the priority during that time. They could have easily stayed in a hotel overnight. His sisters could have EASILY driven her down for a day and went home that night. But no one did. I really thought that was unfair, but not my problem. When Molly was 3 weeks old Scott drove up to MA to get his mother and drove back to LI (with a 1 hour lunch break). My MIL stayed her overnight. Then my husband took her home the next day. I would not have minded if she stayed 2 nights but she watches her granddaughter and had to get home. Both my mom and stepmother came over for 2 hours of so for a few days and helped me clean, brought us dinner, but then they went home. I would never want someone to stay in the house like that. I felt I would have to "entertain" and "cook" and I was not up to that. I don't regret my decision at all.
