My first thought is Tao.
It's trendy asian-fusion-- has good food and is right in Midtown on 57th.
What type of place do you have in mind?

any particular cuisine you are interested in?
For a large group, Carmine's is really good (Italian)... its family style portions , you acn get a few things and share.. and the food is really yummy
Are you looking to stay more in midtown (times square, etc) or downtown?

Any area would be fine...Times Square, Downtown...

here's a description:
The Scene
A 16-foot-tall Buddha lords over this 12,000-square-foot, multilevel spectacle where, even after five years, bodies pack every inch from bar to bathroom. Though there's no dancing, throngs of midtown workers and trendy tourists bring out their inner club kids to the thumping deep house music.
The Food
The Pan-Asian menu could easily become an afterthought in such a scene-centric spot, but Chef Rick Laakkonen runs a reliable kitchen. The satay of Chilean sea bass brushed in miso, shrimp and green beans in a bright XO sauce, and crunchy spring rolls generously stuffed with duck are impressive, but most of the menu falls short, as with lackluster wasabi-crusted filet mignon and flavorless deep-fried lobster dumpling. Desserts, like the giant fortune cookie filled with light and milk chocolate mousse, perfectly embody the spirit of this over-the-top spot.

Solera is the upscale Spanish restaurant of Manhattan. It oozes Spanish country civility with soft lighting, terra-cotta tile floors, a tile-and-brick framed bar and a garden room with wood-beamed ceiling. Well-attended and noisy when full, the restaurant has a variety of prix-fixe or tasting dinners with or without paired wines all the way to a seven-course feast. There are impeccable tapas to nibble at the bar or nosh as a small appetizer at the table. Almonds and olives initiate dining, perhaps with a flinty, chilled fino sherry. There are paellas, of course. We much prefer the shellfish version to the bland vegetable medley. The filet mignon with Cabrales, the zesty blue cheese of Spain, is a big hit and the pan-seared trout fillets over spinach with lardons and salmon roe are full-flavored and satisfying. Solera’s solicitous servers showcase lots of ripe and ready Spanish cheeses and are fine fonts of information on the large and varied list of Spanish wines.

I went to Tao once - my coworkers took me there on my birthday,
Isnt it a little expensive, even for NY standards? Im not sure, I didnt pay 
The Chilean sea bass is AWESOME

Tony DiNapolis is another family style italian restaurant there's one in times square and one on 2nd ave & 83rd street...super delicious! Imo, better then Carmines.
My new fave is dip cafe on 3rd ave and 29th street. It's a fondue restaurant that also has a lot of appetizer platters. Everything I have tried there is delicious.

My absolute all time favorite is Asia De Cuba.
It's on Madison by 26th (I believe) right next to Morgans.

Tapas is always fun with a lot of people. There are a bunch but Xunta (1st between 11th and 12th) and Pipa (in the 20's, between Park and Lex I think) are both really good.

I love Pipa. The food is really good and the sangria is great.
