my sister is by far the most selfish person I have ever met
I am so upset right now. I know that my sister is a selfish person, but she never ceases to amaze me with just how selfish she can be. She is 5 years older than me and is a single mom. When my niece was born I was 19. I helped plan my sister's shower, bought her travel system, and even watched my niece one day a week while going to school full-time and working. I was always there to help out and babysit and never asked for anything in return.
Now that I'm pregnant she hasn't done a damn thing for me or asked if I need help with anything. My mom and I had a falling out a few months ago so I basically planned my own shower, even thouh my parents were still paying for it. I ordered and sent the invites, bought and wrapped all of the favors, bought the centerpieces, etc... She never offered me any help and never tried to smooth things over with me and my mom- which I would have done if the rolls were reversed.
So my shower is this weekend and I know that she hasn't gotten us a gift. So I just asked her if she planned on buying us anything (I know it's rude to ask, but with my sister you have to be direct) She said that she was just going to give us money. I went off!!! How can she not go and buy a gift?! She said that whatever would be left would be too expensive and she didn't want to buy just a bunch of little stuff. Um, my travel system is yet to be bought and if I could afford that at 19, I know full well that she can afford it at 33.
She's just a lazy, selfish woman and I feel sorry for my niece. I hope she never bothers to wonder why DH and I won't be naming her the godmother. 
I'm just so angry about all of this. I am constantly going out of my way for her. I never say no to her and this is how she treats me. Between my DH's brother and my sister, I think we have the worst siblings in the world.

That's awful. So much of what you wrote is just so wrong on so many levels. I'm so sorry that you have people like her in your life. It's so frustrating when you can't count on people who are supposed to be close to you - especially when you have done so much for her.

I totally feel for you and I actually expected a different response from most people. Usually when people ask for gifts that others cant afford people go off. Me personally...I am soooo with you on this. Your sister needs to get you a decent gift c'mon now especially after everything you've done.

sorry, don't have much advice for you... i'm going through some simlar things with my DH's side of the family---
they never want to help with planning anything because of $$!

I am so sorry that you had to do this alone! If I knew, I swear I would have offered to help...this should not be a task for you...it should be a pleasant surprise! As for your sis, it is obvious she is jealous. Just be happy that you are in a much better place than she is and always keep her actions in the back of your mind.

Keep your chin up and know that youre the better person, and Im sure your niece knows how much you love her, and she'll probably realize that you were a better role model to her than her own mom

This sounds like a very confusing family situation. I am sorry that she is being so distant..perhaps the situation with your mother is a part of this?
Maybe your mom and her are speaking and she feels you were in the wrong? NOT saying you were...just that she may feel that you are.
I think you need to take a step back and just realize that if this has always been your sister then she is not going to change.

Unless she was singing two different tunes, my sister didn't feel I was wrong.
But you are right about one thing, my sister is certainly NOT going to change.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this crap! But when the certain (unnamed) family/friends disappoint me..I try to expect the least that way if they do something really nice, I can actually appreciate it because I was so surprised.
