Feeding a 10 months old

Benjamin doesn't have any teeth yet so it makes me hesitant to give him anything other than his usual pureed food. I keep on hearing how it doesn't matter whether he has teeth or not, he can mush food with his gums but I am really afraid to do it. About a month ago, I steamed sweet potato and gave it to him in little cubes as figure food and he almost choked on one. I was absolutely terrified and never repeated the experiment... May be I should have steamed the potatoes longer to make it softer, I don't know..


Anyway, I am just looking for a little insite: what do you feed your 10 months old? I feel like we are stuck in a rut with the same kind of purees. I did start yogurt last week and he seems to be warming up to it. I am also planning on introducing fish this weekend.

Also, what is finger food in your house?

Have you tried pastina or maybe soupy mashed potatoes?

What about some pieces of American Cheese... I agree on the pastina thing too or mashed potatoes - I WISH Michael liked pastina - he doesn't

You can probably try anything as long as it's soft enough for him to gum it...

Small pieces of banana, small pieces of SOFT, cooked carrots, even pears I find are soft enough, cooked peas, things like that - of course I understand your worry but you can try it in SMALL SMALL pieces - I'm still a worry wart and Michael's pretty good about chewing...

lauren, i was oign to try banana. i was goign to get one of those feeding mesh thinging and put it inside... something for him to rub on his gums

I think their gums are stronger than we think...

Denise (Niecey) could probably help you with more ideas since Kevin is still all gums!

The mesh feeder was a great thing to have - you should get one - we used it for a long time - bananas, pears, carrots - we put lots of things in it and he enjoyed it!

Connor only got his firts 2 teeth over the last 2 weeks but he has been eating all kinds of stuff for awhile.

His favorites
Eggs
chop meat or chicken (real small)
grilled cheese
any kind of pasta (again real small)

He basically eats what we eat and has no problem mashing it with his gums. When we first started giving it to him I would use my finger to feed it to him and try and get the food right on his gums.

I am going through the same thing. I gave him cheese and he like it. I gave him little bits of carrot and peas. It only has a half of 2 teeth that aren't even up yet.
He eats yogurt and I am going to try meat this weekend and Pastina.
He doesn't like stage 3 foods either.
I am also worried about him choking.

My DD is 10 months old and has 2 teeth on the bottom and two making their way on top. She loves cheese, macaroni and cheese, eggs and mashed potatoes. I think all of thesde would work with no teeth. It really hard to make the transition to table food, at least it is for us. She is so fickle. I waste so much food trying to find something that she will like. I posted this same question about two weeks ago so youmay want to search for it. The girls had a lot of great suggestions.

Hello! At 10 months, Kevin was mostly eating jar food and yogurt. My dr told me not to rush finger foods that he is still young. At the end of his 10th month to dr still said not to rush but if I want I can try soft foods. Kevin also had no teeth and still has no teeth at a year.

I did try egg yolk around that time and he loved it. I did things like puffs, cheerios, etc. Mashed potatoes and pastina are also good starters - my dr recommended those to me. i also did bits of cheese - all kinds. He also loved things from the store like teether cookies (be careful - Kevin choked on them though) and zwieback toast. he loves gnawing on the end of an Italian bread or a bagel. The dr also recommended mac and cheese. I like all those things are good intro foods.

Around 11.5 months (still with no teeth), I started pretty much trying anything - no teeth and all and he handles it all well - loves meats the most. And I think things like toast feels great on his sore gums - he loves it. I just cut everything super small. He only can't eat things he has to pick up and bite into it.

Oh my dr at out 10 month visit said try anything mushy but stay away from fish, chocolate, honey and nuts.

If it makes you feel better - Kevin choked/gagged on sweet potato and carrots the first time I offered them as finger foods. Now he eats carrots cooked and cut up all the time.

Does you son know how to self feed? If not start trying the puffs. I broke them up at first and it took him a couple weeks to learn to self feed. Once he was doing well and I was more confident - I stopped breaking them and once he is good with them I moved to cheerios. Puffs mush pretty quickly once they put them in their mouth since they have soo much saliva. Also they learn quickly to mash with their gums and they are very strong!! Stronger than you think!! Kevin's worst issue was he chipmunked food esp at first. If you gave him too many puffs - he'd put them all in his mouth at once. He gagged a few times and he eventually learned it isn't fun to do. I hear it is normal so gagging to learn! It sure is scary to the mom!! I also would never give him too many at a time until he learned. He still chipmunks when he really likes something because my son is a piggy.

Once he mastered those two - I moved on to new self feed items - little by little - no rushing. Kevin does not like you to feed him anything but baby food (and even that he has been trying to feed himself but has no control of his spoon - ie very messy meals). Mac and cheese - I do cut up because I am nervous. I cut everything pretty small. I have no clue what is the right size so I try to err on the small side.

What kind of Puffs do you buy? Any particular brand? I am not familair with that cereal.

My son is 10 months and has two bottom teeth. He loves to feed himself. He eats only 1 jarred food a day. I’m very nervous with him eating anything chunky because he has gagged way too many times. I’m taking CPR this month, which might make me feel a little better about giving him chunkier food. He loves to eat puffs and cheerios. My ped says that to feed him what we eat but just in smaller pieces. I figure we have still have some time before trying every type of foods, so I ‘m not to rushing it.

For now he loves:
Pastina (chicken broth or butter)
Eggs
Mashed Potatoes
Chicken

My daughter is 10.5 months old, and has just one tooth. She eats:

Cheerios
Rice Chex
Wheat Bread
Rice Cakes
Peas (still frozen)
Grapes (cut into quarters and peeled)
Shredded Mozzarella
Black Beans
Tofu

She never really let me feed her with a spoon, so I was very grateful that she was interested in finger foods when I started her with them at 9 months.
