Ok girls, who got sent home with thier baby on a monitor
We jsut found out Joseph will be coming home on Sunday but with a monitor.
Who had one and can you tell me all about it?

I didn't personally but my neighbors did. They had their baby about 5 weeks prematurely and when he came home from the hospital he was on the monitor for some time. I don't know a whole lot about the intricacies but if you want, FM me, and I'll get more info from the mom.
By the way, the little critter is now 9 months old and as happy and healthy as can be

the monitor is pretty small in like a pocketbook size bag. it has a "belly strap" similar to what you wore in labor to hold the monitor on your belly.(this one will obviously be on your son) it will monitor his heartrate and if it falls below a certain number it will alarm and LOUD!! most of the alarms will be false alarms just like you probably experienced in the NICU because it''s just a machine. they will give you specific training and in our hospital we require the parents to be taught cpr. IMO every parent should know it anyway. they will probably tell you that you only have to keep the monitor on when the baby is not with you. that will be up to you. it will download into a central location and the apnea team will determine when he doesn't need it anymore. (sorry so LONG)

My friends preemie came home with
the monitor for apnea. She was only on it at night or when away from her mom(sleeping in another room, etc) My friend found it to be a huge releief for her not to have to worry at night or anything. A hint the leads they give you may not stick so buy some adhesive tape because if any of the leads come off the alarm will go off and it is very LOUD. Congratulations!

I had a few friends whose children, actually all sons came home on heart monitors and/or breathing monitors.
The person I'm closest to had a preemie on a heart monitor. Deb - if you want me to have her email you (she's not on the site), FM me your email address & she can update you. Her sister also gave birth to a preemie - who I believe also came home on a monitor as well.

I am not a Mommy yet--but i do work with preemies and apnea monitors often. They are not that bad, and like someone said when they do go off they are LOUD and it is usually a false alarm. The NICU nurses or a person from the homecare company you get the monitor from will explain everything. If byt chance there is an apnea, the noise is usually enough to remind the baby to breathe.

I can't wait for Sunday! and I am so happy and excited since Darren's parents will be in town this weekend from NY! SO happy my parents and his parents will be around to play with him at home.

Gosh, I remember the two Grandma's in one house stage! That's great about Dh's company. My prayers are with your whole family. If you guys need a vaca to the panhandle your more then welcome and I mean that 100%.
