breastfeeding question - confused new mommy

how do I know when she's done - she's only 3 days old and sleepy feeding most of the time - so it takes a long time - but it seems like she'll go on forever even if sleepy and I wake her up to srimulate her - s it's just I don't know if I should take her off or let her go on forever!!!!!! motherhood is intense!!! I am all out of whack

also- I'm so scared about the sleep deprivation - I feel like I might go crazy - I love her so much and don't want to feel like a whacko mommy

Has your milk come in? She's probably cluster feeding, which is completely normal in the beginning and at growth spurts. I would let her nurse as much as she wants ( I know, it's hard Chat Icon ) but she'll help your milk supply along. Chat Icon

She will either fall asleep or pull away and not root again. Yes, it does take a whileChat Icon I would give her 10-15 minutes each side (she will probably take less than that to empty a breast because her little belly is so small). But by then you know she is getting both foremilk and hindmilk (the hindmilk is what will fill her up)

If she's eaten for a while, and you are eager to get up, try to take her off. If she stays asleep, I'd consider her done and feel free to take a break.

Sleep deprivation is brutal, but you will survive it! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It does get easier trust me on that one.. You can tell if she's using you as a pacifier by the way she ***** and the way it feels while shes sucking.. You will get used to her soon BF is hard at first but worth it my DD can empty a breast in 6 minutes flat she's a great sucker and I had panic attacks because I thought she wasnt getting enough. You will find your way soon enough. Where did you give birth? Huntington Hospital has this great women to talk to if it was there. FM me and let me know

Re: breastfeeding question - confused new mommy

It's day three since I've given birth and my milk has not come in yet. The doc said it might come in today - is that correct?

I'm all over the place emotionally but so in love w/ my daughter. Trying to adjust to the BF and sleep deprivation - I always had fear about no sleep and having a baby and BF definitely is pushing my panic and anxeiety up - but I just want to relax and feel confident I'll get thru it.

Thanks everyone for listeningChat Icon

It is hard. The beginning is the worse! Many hugs! Feel free to vent or ask any question though!!!

One thing I did with my first was lay down on my side and let her nurse while I could at least rest with her non-stop nursing. It helped me a lot.

I was in your position a week and half ago and it was very frustrating but like everyone's advise it does get better and you learn to adapt to everything. Just remember to stay calm and try not to get frustrated because the baby will sense that. It does get better just give it some time. My son is 2 weeks old and he still cluster feeds but you learn to adapt to it.

Re: breastfeeding question - confused new mommy

The beginning is hard. You will see that in a few days things will get much better. You have to trust in yourself and nap when the baby does. Do not worry about mopping the floors when she is sleeping. Go to sleep yourself. That really will help you a lot.

Most of all hang in there!!! You can do this! I am breastfeeding our daughter 5 weeks and we all just started to sleep the in the last week or so... The 1st few weeks, we, especially me got NO sleep Chat Icon and it was hard! It does get better if you hang in there I promise Chat Icon

I too worried if she was getting enough too but after her 2 DR appointments I was reassured with her weight gain and clean bill of health Chat Icon that she was fine! Trust your instincts, let her go as long as you think she wants to unless you need a few moments then take her off. She will let you know what she wants! Read her cues and have confidence in what you are doing, I am sure you are doing great!

P.S. There are free breast feeding support groups out there if you need one I can recommend one!
