If you are referring to this ... its just for the real estate section. They should be charging for this kind of advertisement IMO.

The classifieds should still be free.

They will never charge for the classifieds because it would destroy their business model.

They currently get revenue from the job listings as well as the real estate sections now. The people that PAY to list on Craigslist know they are getting their money's worth because of all the traffic the site gets from the people looking at the FREE listings.

If they start charging for the classifieds... their site will start to get less hits... which in the end will mean less money from the paid people.

Re: craigslist is going to start charging

I just read an article/interview with Craig himself. He said he was going to start charging to list real estate postings & some classifieds in certain cities. Not for the regular postings.NY Mag

This month, Newmark will be in New York to take part in a real-estate conference at which he will talk about a proposed $10 fee per ad to try to tame the traffic on the apartments site (the volume is actually a problem for him, because many of the ads are either repeats or scams), even as a new film called 24 Hours on Craigslist opens this month at the Pioneer in the East Village. He will also drop in on some real-estate brokers’ offices

Re: craigslist is going to start charging

I list my co-op there every week. From reading that article, it says that it only going to charge 10 dollars for NYC apartments...so thankfully that doesn't effect me.

They are charging for "brokered" listings. So if you are selling for sale by owner... then yeah it should be free.

But why should places like Century 21 get to advertise on Craigslist for free? I don't buy that.

I think they should charge for ads. Why shouldn't this guy make some money? He's had numerous opportunities to make tons of money, but is content on charging just for RE & jobs. I think that's more than fair.

That's fine...anotehr site will come along and they will be free and everyone can start using hte new site.
Ebay thought that they had a monopolya nd got crazy with fee's and they took a hit when craigs list increased in popularity. I bet the same thing happens again.
