Ok mommies, let's talk infant seats....

I was HORRIFIED yesterday when we went to the doctor because my poor baby's head was all slumped over in the infant seat. Why in hell do they make them to lean FORWARD when their little heads can't stay up? I asked the doctor about it, and he said, as long as there's nothing under her neck, like a strap, then it's fine if her head is slumped, but I'm sorry, I can't bare seeing that. I was able to adjust the head rest thing so that her head doesn't slump side to side, but it's the forwards that's making me freak out!

WEll, that's like what we have already, but her head slumps forward, like chin down.

Make sure that the straps are NOT loose. you should only be able to fit a finger under the straps.

Are you talking about the one that comes with the carseat? This one goes on inaddition to that one so it gives more support.

Also I noticed that with the Graco seats, if you use the base, it happens more than if you just strap in the seat because the angle is different.

You may also want to have your carseat install checked to make sure it's right. They say that isn't supposed to happen if it's installed correctly but I always had that problem too. Chat Icon

I know what you mean. I hate that and don't understand why the seats are leaned forward eitherChat Icon Chat Icon

We recently bought this and it's okay. My son's head definitely doesn't flop forward anymore when he's sleeping, but it's annoying to put them in the car seat with this around the neck area.

Wait, ok, so you don't HAVE to use the base for the car seat?

No you don't. If you look in the manual, you'll see instructions for using your car's seat belts to strap the seat in. Chat Icon I found that when you do it this way, the angle is much better and there's less (or no) slumping.

Re: Ok mommies, let's talk infant seats....

Ok girls, great advice. I'm going to have JT look into all of this! I think part of the problem is that ours is attached in the middle of the back seat, and it bubbles up a bit. The manual said that it can be in any of the back seats, so I am first going to have JT reinstall it behind the passenger seat and see what happens. It just freaked me out. I felt better that the dr. said she's fine, even slumped over, but it's not easy seeing your little one all slumpy!

Re: Ok mommies, let's talk infant seats....

I had this problem too when I first brought Marron home from the hospital. DH adjusted the base in the car and now it is fine. If you have a Graco seat, there is an adjustment on the base to fix the angle that the seat sits at. Look at the seat part, and check the little dial thing that tells you if it is at the right angle. On mine, if there is ANY BIT of orange in the window of that dial then it needs adjusting. Look in the manual to see how to fix this. The seat is definately more secure with the base and on one of the sides (even though I think the middle is safer). I don't know where you live, but the State Trooper barracks in Farmingdale has somebody designated to check installation of carseats. You can find his name by checking the National Highway Safety Administration website (I just don't remember his name, but he did it for me).

Thanks, Catherine. I think it is probably worth the trip there to have the state trooper do it. I think Corinne went there, too, so I will send JT.
