Spinoff to Steve Irwin...

I have noticed that there have been several attacks by animals on people who work with them professionally.

What I mean is Roy (as in Zigfried and Roy) being attacked by the Tiger or the "Grizzly Man" being killed by a bear, and of course the most recent tragedy, Steve Irwin being killed by the Stingray.

Do you believe that these animals are just not meant to "work" or be with people and that we as humans are invading the space of these animals?

Just wondering what other people think.

I definitely believe that animals are animals and they have instincts that they will act on if they feel threatened or violated in any way.

It's hard to say. The only way for us to learn about these animals is to study and work with them. However, we have to remember that they are wild animals. Not puppies and kittens that we can take as pets. These people get harmed (or, unfortunately killed) doing what they love to do.

Absolutely. I'm always amazed at "working" animals - particularly the more dangerous ones - tigers, bears, elephants, etc. I'm surprised how long they keep their patience.

ETA: I definitely think animals should be studied so that we learn about them and our environment in the process. But there is a difference between studying an animal, invading their space, and antagonizing them. And even when a person is studying them from a "safe" distance - there is always a risk because they are wild animals. But I think those people know that.

Re: Spinoff to Steve Irwin...

The tiger didnt actually "attack" Roy.
Roy tripped and the tiger was trying to carry him offstage like a baby tiger, in her mouth.

The media makes things appear differently.

I think animals act on their insticts, they will never be one with man, and they shouldn't be.

However, I think it is key for them to be studied, and publicized to educate the world. This is part of what protects them and their habitat.

I agree with the first statement as well, but Steve Irwin was never trying to change the fact that they were wild animals. What he did what totally different from what Sigfried and Roy do. He was a conservationist - and tried to teach people to respect wildlife.
