At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

Since you girls are much more knowledgable than me about this, here's my question.

If I have been getting AF every 24 to 25 days since I've been off the pill (which is normal for me), that would mean that generally I would probably ovulate around day 12... is that right or am I off? I know its not exact but that is the general time it would happen, right?

DH and I are leaving everything up to chance and not charting or temping or anything like that, but I am kind of thinking of trying to stack the odds in my favor if we BD around ovulation time. I just want to make sure I'm at least in the ballpark range.

Thanks!

Re: At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

The rule is you generally ovulate 2 weeks prior to the day of your 1st pd.

Re: At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

Subtract 14 from the last day of your pd and that's usually the day you ovulate. Your luteal phase (LP) is what should remain the same from month to month. Your luteal phase is calculated by counting the number of days from ovulation until the last day of your pd. In your case, I would think you ovulate on or around CD10. Your best bet would be to go out and buy an OPK. You can get really cheap ones and all you have to do is POAS from day 10 or so until you get a surge. Good Luck!

Re: At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

Let me see if I understand this...

Last month, the last day of my period was 11/28, so counting back 14 days would make ovulation day 11/14... and then I just have to figure out when my period started in the beginning of November and count forward and that would be how many days until I ovulate.

If that's correct, then I think I'm starting to get this. It's all new to me... and I thought I had a clue how my own body worked!! Chat Icon

Thanks for the help.

yes day 1 is the day you start to get your period. then usually its 2 weeks until you ovulate i have a 26 days cycle and get three bars ( which means i am ovulating) on my clear blue fertility monitor on days 13 and 14.

Re: At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

There are basically two phases to a cycle. The beginning phase is follicular phase...the follies grow, if not medicated, one usually takes the lead, matures,...and then ruptures, and out pops an egg. :)

Now, that process can range and change. Stress can even , alter, how long it takes for the follicules to mature.

On the average, it takes follicule to reach approximately 22mm before it ruptures/ovulates. The rate the follie grows is usually 1mm to 2mm a day.

Ovulation is the process in which the follicule releases an egg. The leftover portion of the follicule remains in the ovary and is called the corpus luteum....and that secretes progesterone (your temps rise when progesterone is being secreted)....that phase is called the LUTEAL PHASE (corpus luteum). This phase usually stays constant for each woman but each woman can have a different luteal phase length. We call it a 2ww because, the luteal phase is approximately 14 days. However, some women have shorter phases by a few days and others a little longer a few days. According to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, if your luteal phase exceeds 18 days, there is a great chance you are PREGNANT :) Most people don't have a LP longer than 16 days...

Knowing your Luteal phase, can help you determine whether AF is late or not, because even though you ovulated, let's say cd 14, if you luteal phase is 14 days, your Af won't be late unless you LP extended that amount. The next cycle you can ovulate, cd 17...but your luteal phase will probably still remain ....14 days. That's how come cycle lengths can change.

I always think to play it safe, ...start using opks...16-18 days less than your shortest cycle,...so if your shortest cycle is 28 days...I would start tracking O....cd8. or if you don't want to use opks, start bding every other day from that point on.

Re: At the risk of sounding ignorant....ovulation question

This was my first month using an OPK and either I'm the dumbest person on earth or I didn't ovulate this month or a little of both, lol. I have a 30-33 day cycle and I used the OPK from CD13-19. On CD17 it read a little darker than the rest and then went back to really light. Maybe I ovulated on CD17 but I didn't get a true darker reading. It is so confusing to tell. I say just BD ALL MONTH LONG!!!!!
