jury duty- they must be psychic! vent and QUESTION!
They always know when it is the absolute worst time for me and then send me a summons!  I postponed it 2x (the first b/c I was hospitalized when I was preggo and the 2nd b/c they summoned me on the day I was to be induced!) I just received one in the mail today for the last week of Aug. (I go back to work the folloing week). I just know I am going to be picked! Since I am not working until school begins, and childcare is sort of an issue, can I be exempt b/c of this? Someone told me on my questionaire I can write in child care issues and they will let me go.
TIA!
PS- the reason that this is a bad time for me is that I have to get my classroom ready and that my students are scheduled to drop off supplies that week and to meet me.
PPS- and I don't want to sound like I am a bad citizen- I wouldn't mind serving but COME ON!

You can be excused from jury duty completely. If you write on the summons that you have an X old child and provide them with a copy of the baby's birth certificate, wala no jury duty for 4 years.

I got one a few months ago, and I typed a letter saying I have a baby and I BF her and I have no one to watch her. They excused me, with out any problems.

Really? Where did you find this out???
I actually did it. I got called when she was 2 months old and I called them and they told me what i needed to do to be excused. I dont think the 2 postponments would be a problem.

I postponed 2xs too then I got another and wrote I was BF and had childcare issues and sent a copy of her birth certificate and havent heard since they said they would write back only if it was a problem..

They did the same to me. I was called in Sept to server just as I was returning from maternity leave. Luckily my number was never called so I never had to go in. Just pray for a high number.

I got a summons at the very end of my 8th month of pregnancy, but because I had a high number, I risked it and didn't postpone. I never got called, but I figured if I did, I'd basically have a pretty good excuse for not being able to sit on a jury!
Lora, did you get the letter telling you to call in? If so, what's your number?

I got one when he was first born. Right on mine it said if you have a child under 16 write a letter and a copy of birth certificate. You can get out of it every time

Rachel, yes, it is the letter that you have to call in. My number is 216! So I just know I'll be called!
I am going to try the BF and child care letter. Please keep your fingers crossed!

I got the call-in jury duty summons last summer and there was a part on the back that detailed two excuses - one for child care and one for care for medical reasons. I sent in my letter detailing that I was the sole-provider while my DH works and sent in a copy of his birth certificate. I sent it certified mail, return receipt requested. I know they got it.
Wouldn't you know how surprised I was when 3 months later I got another call to duty (not even callin, but already selected for jury duty) because I was a deliquent juror (meaning I never responded to my first summons, but I did). I was furiuos and called and the woman said they had no record of me and no paper work that I sent in (which was BULL because I had the return receipt saying they got it!!!).
IN any case, the lady was nice and asked me to send it all back in (thankfullyu I made copies too) and I called two days later and she said she had gotten it and I was given 2 years off from being summoned.
So, make copies of everything you send and send it so that you get a receipt of them receiving it!!
