I am a regular poster, but uncomfortable asking this

Are there any girls who are taking an anti-depressent and TTC?

I started taking medication in April for depression and anxiety and it has helped me tremendously. I was so against medication, but I started see a therapist and she really wanted me to try it. I finally gave in and it has helped so much. I feel so much better. I am less anxious and I don't get so irritated over things. I can focus and I just feel like me.

What I am concerned about is in the near future, we will be TTC. What do I do? Do I go off the medication?

Has anybody gone through this?

I was taking medication when I got pregnant. I was on Wellbutrin XL, which is safe to take while pregnant. DO NOT just stop your meds cold turkey. Go and speak with your Dr. and they will give you something that you can take while pregnant. You may be able to stay on the same emds you are taking now.

While starting to think about TTC, I asked my doctor for something to help me quit smoking. He was able to prescribe me Buproban which was to help. He said it was safe for pregnant women. Talk to your doctor; let them know what is going on with you so you are all on the same page.

Good luck and lots of baby dust!

Im taking Paxil , and I am for the time being currently not going to stop it. I will once I get PG discuss lowering the dose with my DR or possibly coming off of it. ITs a tricky thing.

I'm taking Effexor for anxiety but I'm stopping it next week- after 2 1/2 years!!

I lowered my dose very very gradually- I don't want to be on it though when we TTC next year. I'm nervous my anxiety will come back but I want to give it a try...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am a regular poster, but uncomfortable asking this

I am on Lexapro and xanax as needed, we are not TTC, but will be soon, here is my plan - I am already decreasing the dose of lexapro to 3x a week, that is what my Dr. told me to do and then I see her in a month to see the next step and as for xanax, I take it when needed, I have been taking it about 1x every 2 or 3 weeks.
I am just PRAYING that being the nervous and anxious person I am that being pregnant doesn't make it worse.

I heard not from a Dr, but I heard that Zoloft is the only one safe for pregnancy, I have no idea if that is true or not and I heard that xanax is a no-no.

Xanax is definitely a no-no. It is a very strrong drug and shouldn't be taken when TTC or being pregnant. I was on Paxil and then Effexor and the doctor said I could stay on it but I refused to. I didn't want to take any additional chances. He helped me lower my dosage slowly and then I stopped. I suffer from anxiety and I have difficult moments now and then but I deal with them.

I did the Xanax thing for a little while, but then moved to Paxil as well. I also felt that I was better off being off the Paxil (although if I had known it was going to take so long I might have stayed on).

I will also echo the statements of some other girls - don't get off them until you talk to your doctor. I didn't follow that advice and stopped cold turkey and the withdrawal was really really hard!!

Good luck whatever you decide and if you need to talk, feel free to FM me!! Chat Icon

all of the SSRI's are equally safe (lexapro, zoloft, paxil, prozac). Prozac has been used and studied the most. Xanax is a benzodiazepine. It is very unsafe in the first and third trimesters. It has a short half life so it is probably fine while you are TTC (but not in the 2WW).

Thank you everyone for your responses. It really helps to know I am not alone.

I am on 20 mg fluoxetine which is the generic drug Prozac.

Has anyone been on this during the TTC time and the whole pregnancy?

That's the thing is better to stay on or go off? It's tricky, you want the best for your baby, but you're just not sure what to do.

Both my therapist and gyno say I can most likely stay on the medicaton, but just that small chance it could affect baby makes me think.

Should I just go off the medication for that time period? Just to be on the same side?

When you went off cold turkey, what did you go through?

I just don't want those hopeless feelings or getting irritated at everything.

Re: I am a regular poster, but uncomfortable asking this

I have heard Prozac is a safer one. The FDA recently posted some kinda disheartening news about Paxil which is what Im on. And to be honest Im still undecided like I said in my previous post about what to do. I cant take the chance of the PG hormones really making me depressed or anxious.

I actually experienced the first signs of this anxiety probelm severly during my first pregnancy and its true that the hormones sometimes are too much to handle when you are already predisposed to having any issues.

SO, Im taking it day by day. IF and when I get PG, I will probably see how I feel after a few weeks. And discuss it again with the DR.

ITs scary and Im sorry you have to deal with this as well.

Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon
