How many people have pet insurance?

Just curious. We do not but a friend of mine just purchased it for her long haired chichuwawa after spending $5000 to find out what was wrong with her and came to no definite conclusion.

Re: How many people have pet insurance?

We have VPI for our two Yorkies. I pay only $20.00 -per month for the younger one, and $25.00 per month for the older one (2yo and 3yo, respectively). For people living on LI, it's best to have CATASTROPHIC insurance (that's what VPI calls it) because you will get the most out of your money with it. Regular insurance is not worth paying for because we would get little back for routine visits (that's what an agent said about VPI and people living in NY/on LI) It's almost not worth having all that coverage. Yearly vaxes alone for my two is about 660.00 and if I were to submit that claim, I'd only get like 100 dollars back at MOST. Catastrophic insurance is great for the biggest reason why I got insurance in the first place - freak accidents, illnesses, cancers, etc. You could always get regular insurance for the first year, and then drop it down to only catastrophic after your pup reaches a year old. That's what I did and I find that it really worked out.

*Small dogs ARE more accident prone than larger ones. My parents' Yorkie broke its leg at only 4 months old, and $2,000.00+ later, they wished they had insurance!

Re: How many people have pet insurance?

I have VPI and pay about $32 a month for my cocker spaniel. I have the largest package they have with full coverage. I really have not seen the need for it YET as I probably paid more than I have gotten back so far, but I don't want to take the chance in case something big does happen.
