Re: silly question about 2ww
First of all no question is silly :)
If you ovulate cd 20 but you have a 28 day cycle your 'wait' would only be 8 days. The 2ww is known as the LUTEAL PHASE of your cycle.
Cycles have two phases, follicular (the follies grow, one takes the lead, matures faster than the others and out comes an egg- ovulation)
The second phase is the luteal phase (LP), it's called that because, when the egg is released from the follicule, a portion of the follicule,....remains in the ovary. That is called the corpus luteum...hence luteal phase.
The corpus luteum secretes progesterone. Progesterone - gestation. It's a hormone that sustains pregnancy...warms up the uterus and nourishes the uterine lining. It's the hormone that makes your temperature increase...so that you can confirm ovulation.
The corpus luteum usually has a lifespan of about 14 days. If you are pregnant, it will continue secreting progesterone till about the 10th week of pregnancy. If you aren't pregnant, it will dissolve at about 14 days and stop the progesterone secretion, and then your uterine lining will shed...and then Af comes
Now if your LP is only 8 days...that means the corpus luteum is not living up to it's potential. An 8 day LP is considered 'SHORT' and considered, luteal phase defect. The corpus luteum may not be secreting enough progesterone and you may need progesterone suppositories. Not having a long enough LP can interfere with implantation. The embryo, may not have enough time to stick to the lining...The lining may not be warm/soft/or sticky enough...and therefore, pregnancy may not take place. Basically, if you are sure your LP is only 8 days, see your doctor ...and ask for progesterone suppositories to extend the LP. B6 or B complex vitamins also are known to extend the LP.

Re: silly question about 2ww
Thanks redstar! I'm not sure when I ovulate yet - I'm still in the learning phase. I was just curious how it works. How do you know so much???
