Anyone Find and Buy their home ....
w/o a Realtor ?? I am finding these people VERY pushy to the point where I am uncomfortable, they insist on wasting my and DH's time by showing us homes which have/do not have the very few specific things we want/do not want ...(ie: I want a basement, it doesn't matter if YOU don't think it's important, I do - DON'T bring me to a home w/o a basement ........is this SO hard??) ....I'm sure not all realtors are like this, but unfortunately, we have been having a very unpleasant experience. ........
Is it THAT big of a deal for me to just do everything on my own ?? Or am I asking for trouble ?? We're 1st time home buyers so we don't know what we're doing and all of the research in the world isn't going to help when you're dealing w/ someone experienced .......

Yup... We were working with a realtor who would show us crap and stuff that was out of our price range.
We decided to look on our own and thats how we found our house. We did a search on MLSLI for open houses and found it that way,
HOWEVER I can recomend a Great realtor who isn't pushy!

its possible. i agree with the pushiness of some of these realtors.
FH's best friend just got his R/E license, so he is our realtor. But if we didnt have a friend, I would do it on my own!

We did! We looked on MLSLI & also in Newsday for open houses. We went to as many as we could in a day & that is how we stumbled upon our house!
In the beginning we were working w/an agent but we were shown so much stuff that we "didn't" want.

We did...but it was the house right next door to the one we'd been renting from 
I tried all routes - working with one exclusively, just doing the open house circuit, working with a few different ones at once. Some were nice, some were pushy.....you just have to make a decision right away and whatever you do, do NOT give out your phone number! LOL I only gave people my email address (unless I was going out with them one on one).
Make sure whomever you're working with knows exactly what you do and do not want. Be firm. Don't let anyone waste your time.

We sold our co-op on our own and found our home on our own. It was such a great process all around but that's because off all of the people involved.

yes, we weren't really seriously looking, so we didn't have a realtor. We randomly went to an open house, and we ended up making an offer.

We did it with realtors and I ended up doing most of the work so ultimately I gave up on them.
We found our home at an open house by the owner and got the house for less than other people had offered w/ a realtor.
If your a good researcher you can definitely do it alone.

We looked on our own and we were referred to someone.
He was a nice guy but showed us CRAP!!
It was sooo bad. I mean I was doing 1/2 the work telling him which houses I wanted to look at, printing them out ( I had access to the realtor listings) he was taking me to homes 2&3 towns over that were not even close to what we wanted.
Last straw was when he was unavailable on Sunday to go to open houses w/ us. We went on our own. We met up w/ him later that day and told him about a house we liked and possibly wanted to make an offer on.
He was P.I.S.S.E.D! He was like...well, Did you talk to the realtor??? Did you tell them your names??? Because I didn't go with you that realtor doesn't have to give me commission!!"
I couldn't believe it. It was only week 2 of looking w/ him also.
We ditched him & wound up finding our house on our own.

Yes, we bought our first co-op without a realtor. We just called the sellers broker ourselves and setup appointments.

We did, we found the house we bought on mlsli. A friend of mine who is a RE showed us a few houses that she had come across, but that was it.

yeah we had a realtor who showed us nothing but stuff out of our price range so one weekend we went on mlsli and found a bunch of houses and set up our own appt to see them and that weekend we bought our house without the realtor and she just happened to find out and called us up screaming at usand we explained that she stunk at her job lol.

I do have to say that my friend went to go look at a house and the seller told her $410 and if you go online it says $429900....Interesting. As for realtors, I think it's like finding a good Therapist.
We've seen crap and at the top of our price range. If you tell them you can go no higher than $400 - they show you $440.

My parents have a friend who is a realtor, so we went with him. We still did some work on our own looking for houses. But ultimately, he did find the house we're in the process of buying. I dont' know if we'd have looked at it if it weren't for him, so I'd say he's worth it!

I can recommend an excellent realtor if you would like. She works for ReMax in Merrick. I used her and recommend her all the time. She was wonderful, patient and we only looked at exactly what we wanted and what she knew we could afford. No games!
