bringing home a dog questions...

I have some questions about bringing home a dog (please not attacks ladies - I am still looking for its owner - but I went to see him yesterday at the shelter and I just dont want to leave him there anymore. If the owner is not found I will keep him and take care of him)

This is what I think I need to start - am I missing anything

food dishes
Food
Leash
Collar
TAGS!!!
Toys
poopoo bags
Kennel
Bed
treats

what am I missing?

Also i have another question. If he is trained to go outside...but I leave him in my kitchen for the day with paper (locked into the kitchen so he cant get out and harm himself) will he go on the paper - or will that just confuse him?

He is about 2 years old.

Any other advice is appreciated.

unless he has gone on the paper before, he will probbaly not know what it is for.

but how long will he be left alone? big dogs should be able to be alone for 8 hours.

you pretty much have everything you need, btw.

Re: bringing home a dog questions...

I work from 12-5 so he will be alone for about 5-6 hours depending on when my hubby comes home - there are one or two days I might be gone longer - but only a few since I will only be working for another month - then I will be home full time.

Re: bringing home a dog questions...

that should be fine. leave paper down anyway if you choose.

i would go with wee wee pads rather than paper though.

also, you hsould post on the PET board b/c they may think of more advice

Thanks. I also have a neighbor that will check on him so that makes me feel better. He would walk him for me.

I agree with Lolita, I would get teh wee-wee pads rather than leave paper. Also if you are only gone for 5-6 hours that shouldnt be too bad. My dog is home from 8:30-5 and she has no problems now, when she was a pup that was a different story. If you feed him right when you get up and let him out before you leave you should be OK. Good luck!
