Need Ideas for Painting Den

ok here is a pic of what our walls look like in our den.

They are dark wood and ugly.

I kind of like the bottom pattern sort of like wainscotting.

We don't have the money to redo the walls now since we need windows. What colors would you do these walls if this were your house?

We just purchased beech pergo floors to put down since they have an ugly green rug.

The furniture going in is going to be cream leather couches and glass/light wood end tables.

What is under the ugly green rug? Could it last you until you attend to the wall first. I'm thinking these walls need attention prior to any floor going down. The wood paneling needs to come down or at least the top portion. I agree the bottom may be a nice wainscotting option.

What's behind the paneling? Wall paper, bad wallboards??..it could turn into more of a project which could impact the new pergo floor.

Re: Need Ideas for Painting Den

well the green carpet is all stained and smells horrible. Chat Icon underneath the carpet is cement.

the walls are going to be a huge project because they need all new windows and right now there are about 8 windows and 2 exterior doors in the room.

R those wood panels on the Walls? Would you dare to remove them and see what is behind them? If not paint white first then a neutral color over it...beiges, Creams...even A pale yellow?

I took a look at your album. If you tackle the walls first (just the walls), the only impact to the windows would be the trim around them. You could pull the paneling off without totally ruining the wall. You may need to patch (spackle) a few holes from nails if anything. Small nails are used to hang paneling so you should be ok. I would take a small section off to see what is behind the paneling. If it's just a wall and they are in good shape, paint it then do your floors. My point is, do all your wall work first. This way you don't ruin your new Pergo.Taking the paneling down and painting will be the cost of paint, rollers etc and your time.

If the walls are damaged beyond repair (unlikely) then I would consider replacing the carpet with a inexpensive carpet until you get the walls done.

I think I agree - I would want to do the walls first - only because you are spending the money to put down nice floors - you don't want to ruin them later.

Is there a "short wall" that has an entrance or a doorway where you could try to take off a bit and see what lies beneath?

nah...my parents had wood paneling on their walls in the living room and my dad took it off and the walls behind them were in good shape..he only had to spackle a bit...honestly I agree with the other ladies and tackle the walls first..then go to the floors

You can also just unscrew that outlet cover and you will be able to tell if their is sheetrock behind it. I know that in my parents house their is no sheetrock behind the walls, and by looking at yours it looks like that is real wood and not paneling.

Re: Need Ideas for Painting Den

If I do the walls now, do I have to do the windows? I mean I know it would make the most sense but its going to be like almost 2000 for windows.

That would probably look awesome. I would keep the paneling I really like the look. I would paint it first and then if you don't like it replace it.

Bridget

Edited to add: Clean the panneling really well a couple of days in a row and then use killz primer so it will not bleed throught the color. If you dont clean it well first then all of the dirt and moisture the walls have absorbed will blled through.

I don't believe you will have to replace the windows now if you end up doing the walls first. But, you should look at what you’re dealing with regard to the walls prior to installing new flooring.

Worse case: There is no wall (which I doubt) behind the paneling. You will need to install wallboard, tape, spackle, light sanding, paint and install new trim around the windows. This you would want to do prior to installing a new floor.

You can check for walls behind the paneling a couple of ways, punch the wall lightly Chat Icon. If it's hollow sounding in areas then no wall exists. If it's not hollow and feel support behind each light punch then a wall exists. Or, take a small piece of paneling down.

Better case: There is a wall behind the paneling. You may need to install wallboard (depending on the condition of the existing wallboard), tape, spackle and sanding lightly. You will need to paint and install new trim around the windows. Painting and installing new trim around the windows can be accomplished with new floors installed as long as you cover them while painting. Laminate does well with paint "droplets". You can wait for it to dry and wipe it up. I have laminate in my home and have experienced this.

Re: Need Ideas for Painting Den

My FIL has wood paneling in his house but when he put it up in the 70s he did it right and there is brand new sheetrock behind it. You might not find as much of a nightmare if you remove it. I think the bottom part would look great painted tan with white trim in a den --- but I would try seeing what is underneath there -- at least for the top!

Re: Need Ideas for Painting Den

If the wood is in decent shape, don't make yourself crazy - Just sand them down and paint them - WORST case scenario, they look bad and you enentually take the walls down -

I don't think it matters when you do the windows - if you take the paneling off now, the most you will have to do when the windows are done is to get new molding and touch up paint.
