Removing closed accouts from credit report

I was just looking over my credit report and there are a few cresit cards on there that I closed in 2000 or 2001. How do I get them removed? I feel I have so many entries on my credit report!! (30 to be exact!!)

Re: Removing closed accouts from credit report

there should be contact numbers that you can call on the report itse;f. Call those numbers and make sure the accts are closed. Call and ask how they can be removed from your credit report.

NEVER remove credit accounts from your credit report. Especially older ones! Removing old credit accounts accomplishes nothing.

One of the biggest factors of determining a credit score is LENGTH OF CREDIT HISTORY. They get this by seeing how many "older" accounts you have.

Yes! I'm pretty young so more often than not if I get rejected for something it's a "length of credit" problem.

Plus, I didn't think you could get stuff removed, I thought it had to age off

You shouldn't close them either.

Another factor in determing a credit score is your percentage of credit owed comparted to available credit.

If you owe 1k on a 2k limit credit card. And you also have a 8k credit card with no balance.... you currently are at 10% debt owed.

If you decide to close that 8k credit card... your available credit drops to 2k... and you are now at 50% debt owed. Very bad!

Re: Removing closed accouts from credit report

well As far as I know you cant remove them. And second, even if they are not the best accounts ( meaning payment wise) they still are there to help your credit, like DJ said. You should want to KEEP them there.

Re: Removing closed accouts from credit report

As much as Phil is correct, he is also incorrect as Banks do not want to fund more money then you could possible owe and pay back

For example, you have 10k in open credit, the bank will not want to fund another 10k (20k total open) and then not be able to pay back the money. The "POTENTIAL" of spending X amount hurts you....

Yes but the potential doesn't hurt nearly as much as closing older accounts or increasing your debt to available credit ratio.

If they are already close, which is what the poster said in the beginning, they should read "closed as per customer request"

I agree with the other posters, you are supposed to have closed accounts say: "closed as per customer request"
