Pet Related..But Need HELP ASAP
My BIL found a found a little do a few weeks ago. He called the owner & gave the do back. A few days later the dog returned to him, he called the owner again and took him back. The owner wasn't happy or glad to see the dog my BIL says. So a few days ago he saw the doggie in his neighborhood again. This time he & his wife kept the dog & called me to see if I wanted it. I took him home last night and he's a great little dog.
Thing is the dog only had his rabies shot tag on him & nothing else. The tag reads 2006. Is that the year the shot was given or expires??? I don't know if he can have another shot..will he get sick. I want to get him licensed since my BIL says he is 90% sure the owners let him go. I want to give him a happy home and I don't know what to do.....should I call his old vet??? HELP!!

My dogs tag says 2003. That's when he got his rabies shot and it's good for 3 years.
*Good thing you posted this. I forgot he's due for a shot in August!

They should be able to tell when the shot was given based on the registration #. I would not worry about the dog's shots as of yet. When you bring the dog to the vet, they will let you know how to proceed.

I get that, but I don't want to take him to the same vet. I don't want them to take him away from me....poor doggie. My SIL said she caleld the owner a few times and left her number and he never called her back. She said the 1st time she went to take the dog back he told her they just had a baby, so she thinks maybe that is why they don't want him.

I don't even know. He's such a cutie. I will take pics & post them tonight. He's small about 15 lbs. He has like little tight curly hair, he's blcak. We named him Chiquito(Mari did actually)

You don't have to tell them anything except that you found the dog or the owner refused to come get the dog. That happens a lot. I can't imagine that the vet will take him away from you.

Yeah, you're right. I just want to get him licesed and do everything right. Marissa is so happy w/ him. She's an only child so this dog will keep her company.  I will post pics soon. So you guys can see him.

I think it's so great that you took him in!!! Now he has someone that will love him and take care of him!!!!! I can't wait to see pictures!!!

Please don't forget to post pictures.
You should take him to the Vet. The vet will probably tell you that you should give all the shots so that way you know for sure he has gotten everything that he needs. Doing this will not do any harm on the puppy either.
Looking forward to seeing pictures !!!

FYI, rabies tags are color coded and are usually good for 3 years depending on the vet. The color coding is in the case a dog bites someone, it's not likely they will catch the date on the tag, but if they can remember the color, you will be able to determine if the dog is within range of a shot. Safety precaution.
Just call a local vet and ask them what should be done re: shots. Also, there should be an ID # on the tag and the name of the vet that gave the shots where you can probably get your best information.
