Keeping bottles cold for a long car trip?

I want to make all the bottles we need for our car trip to NC. We will be stopping overnight at a hotel, but need 4 bottles each to last us until we get to NC. Will packing them in a cooler keep them cold enough for that long. We will be leaving at 5 pm, and we figure we will get there at around noon the next day. I use breast milk and ready to feed, so it makes it harder. I don't want to try powder, since they have never taken it before and I still need to keep the breast milk refrigerated.

Thanks!

When I've done long car rides-about 4-5 hours, I've used the bottle bag that we have and packed it with ice packs. I'm sure a cooler would work well too. Just put plenty of ice in and everything should stay cool.

I keep EBM in a cool bag with an ice pack over night every night when I go up to sleep (so I don't have to go downstairs in the middle of the night) and they stay very cold. I would think you would be fine with a cooler

Alternatively, could you fill all the bottles with water and use premeasured formula in a container and mix them as needed???

ETA to say EBM has a really long shelf life, at room temperature it should be okay for 6-7 hours and in the fridge for a few days

Michelle I think as long as you have enough ice packs/ice you should be fine. Plus you can always stop for ice along the wayChat Icon

Stacey - that is true I never thought of getting more ice, DUH!!!! Especially if we are at a hotel, they have ice machines, LOL.

I didn't thin it was cold enough though, but when I use the bottle bag with one small ice pack they stay cold, so I am not really sure what I am worrying about.:)

I only used RTF and always used a cooler or cooler bags and it was always fine. Load it up with ice/ice packs.

Let me know how your trip goes - I am driving to NC in July.

We decided to do the stop overnight, so hopefully it will not be bad. Now I just have to find a hotel in the middle.

We are stopping in VA - we booked a hotel already - we have like 3-5 couples staying so we booked early in case. I can find out the name if you like.

That would be great, is that 1/2 way there?

Courtyard by marriott in norfolk

we guess about - 7 hours to norfolk, then another 3-330 to waves in outer banks

We tried to find something a little more in between but with the route it didn't work out well. We picked another place but then a girl going on the trip said it wasn't in a "desirable neighborhood" (she went to school near there) and since our cars are going to be fully loaded for a week away we didn't want to chance it - they had no secured parking. This place has valet parking and security. has a pool and we got some breakfast thing included.

I have a mini fridge from Sharper Image for the car. You can use it if you want. I don't know how much it holds, though!

We're thinking of going down there in August ladies, so let me know how it goes!! We'll definitely stay somewhere overnight, too. No way my boys (or me) can handle 11 hours straight!! I'm already dreading the 5 hours to NH next month! Chat Icon
