$ wise, I think they're about the same.
having lived in a house with oil and now in an apt with gas, I prefer gas heat. there are no contracts to negotiate or deliveries. when I lived at home and my folks would get a delivery, sometimes there were problems. all the 'crap' on the bottom of the tank would clog up the system and it would shut down. eventually they got a new tank (HUGE MONEY!), but every now and then they still have issues.
also, gas heat burns cleaner.

We have oil but looked into putting a gas line back into our house for the dryer and cooking...I was told it would take 6-8 weeks AFTER I got a plumber in, filled out paperwork and had the town approve the safety. We couldn't wait that long to do wash, so we went with electric. I was told, however, that if it were for heat I could get it in 4-6 weeks. 
With gas you could also run a line for your stove and dryer - gas cooking is so much better and a gas dryer (while it costs about $50 or so more than electric) is cheaper to run.

that's another thing I LOVE! cooking with gas!! it's the best. but in a house, you can get a propane tank and hook it up to the stove.

We have to also have to bring in the gas line and plan to use that for the hot water heater, washer /dryer, and stove.
We're are staying w/ oil heat for now but plan to switch to gas maybe next year.
Personally, I perfer gas, I think its cleaner and hassle free and I hate having a huge oil tank in the basement. It used to be cheaper too, hopefully it will be again sometime soon...

I have oil and had it where I grew up. I like it but I think gas is just as good. One of the things that bugs me about gas is that you are beholden to LIPA/Keyspan..but then again with oil we are beholden to a whole other set of circumstances. At least I can negotiate my contract. I never had a problem with oil though.
I have propane tanks for my stove..I wouldn't have it any other way.

you don't have to go with Keyspan for energy delivery. you can choose another company. I researched it a little a few yrs back and found them to have the best prices. they have a lot of buying power b/c they're so big.

Because they know they are the only game in town and they use it to their advantage. They really do take advantage of their position in the market.

I'm pretty sure that if LIPA raises their rates they have to clear it with Gov't officials first. either that or they have to make a case for the increase. not 100% sure though

We have gas and it is far superior for cooking! I hate cooking on electric stoves! (although electric ovens are best for evenness)
We have gas heat as well and I have always heard that it is about the same as oil, but last winter my bills were RARELY more than $150 - and often $100
I like that it is clean - no puffbacks, no big tank, no worry if I am going to run out, etc
My father did scare me about the dangers (mind you he has had gas for 40+ years) - and its a blue moon that you hear something going wrong with gas.
