Anyone's basement ever REALLY flood? Now With Pics

My dad just came home last night from a week in Fla. When he walked in he heard a strange sound from the basement. He looked downstairs and there was 42 inches of water in there!! He called the fire dept and they came over with the police to make sure his burner was shut off, and they had to SWIM to shut off the water main.

I was there on Thursday to pick up their mail, and it was fine!

Anyway, the firemen and officers told him that plumbers don't like to pump, so he will have a hard time finding someone to do it. He called a few emergency services this morning, and still no call backs. He got in touch with one service and they said he should call his insurance co.

Has this ever happened to anyone?? What do you do? He has no heat or water and I made him sleep here last night. He set up the pool pump, but its so small I can't imagine it will do anything. He wanted to rent a pump at Home Depot, but I rather someone professional do it...Plus, all the outlets are covered with water and I don't want him touching anything...

Thank G-d my mom is still in Fla b/c she would be insane.

Re: Anyone's basement ever REALLY flood?

lisa when we bough our house it had just been flooded. The water in my house came from heating pipes on the first floor that froze & burst (the house was vacant). The real estate told us our basement had three to four FEET of water in it-plus everything on the first floor was destroyed.
the hired a clean up crew to pump out the basement(the name was Avanced Clean up I believe) which in turn RUINED the back yard because the water ran out of the pump for days. They gutted everything that got wet, all the electrical & heating system needed to be replaced-and that's when we found the house.
It is my understanding the oweners got a hefty insurance check which is why the sold it to us for so little.
Good luck to your dad, what a freaking nightmare!

It happened to my parents I walked down into our basement and about 3 steps to the bottom my foot got wet (and it was sewage.. nasty). I called State Farm ASAP and that night they had someone out to pump and treat everything. They we were really great.

Oh no!! I don't have any advice, but wanted to wish you luck trying to find someone to help get the water out.

Maybe if you go to Home Depot and explain what happen, they can recommend someone.

We used to have this happen all the time when I was growing up. My parents always rented the pump and pumped it out. Finally, my dad had the basement waterproofed about 2 years ago. So far everyting has been ok.

OMG...Looking at that cabinet it looks like it was even higher than it is now in the pics. Sorry for Dad. We have a partial basement here and we are right on the water..so every time it rains or snows, we are almost guarenteed a flooded basement. We have a pump down there which pumps the water right out to the sewer. Hope everything gets cleaned up quickly!!Chat Icon

Its flooded before, but never like this! Who knows how long the water was gushing since no one was there since Thursday.

Its finally pumped out and it seems the water heater burst. So, the water kept cycling through and pouring out the bottom. And, the thing is only 5 years old!

This happened at my parents house a few years ago- all my baby stuff was ruined. Anyway, their insurance covered all the cleanup (they had a company come in) we had to have it gutted- all the sheetrock had to be removed because of the chance of mold. The whole place had to be demolished to the frame. The insurance paid for cleanup and the paid for a small % of the things that were ruined. If this happens a lot though, be careful with the insurance because it happened to my parents twice and after this second, the ins. co. dropped them.

ETS: I'm sorry you have to go through this, I'll never forget sitting in tears on my back lawn as I tried to open up the pages of my baby to so they would hopefully dry!

He has a restoration company coming tomorrow. I have a feeling everything will have to be torn out too. What a mess.

They just bought an apt/condo, but it won't be ready until the summer, so they have been cleaning stuff out. Luckily a lot of stuff was recently moved or thrown out!
