Anyone know how much it costs to upgrade electric and re-wire your house?
WE figured that since we were gutting the house we should re-wire too since everything is original from 1927.

We just did this a few months ago and also had additional outlets installed for the a/c units and ran electric to the yard - it was about $1250

really??? i would've totally thought it would run alot more $$$. that's quite affordable. mind sharing who you used? and how old is your house, (if that makes a difference)...ours was built in 1965.

The company who did it was Tuscan Electric - its a father/son team. They were affordable and fast. Our house was built in 1987. I dont know if that matters. I dont have their # off hand but Im sure they're listed - if you cant find it I can get it from our friends (they used them too).

Electric upgrade is a one day event. Can run you anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 depending upon the house. Are you just upgrading the box? Adding new outlets?
Did you say you needed the entire house rewired, that depends and is much pricier? Is it a two-story? Are most areas of the ground floor accessible by a basement? That makes it easier.
We just got a quote to completely rewire our new a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom colonial was $10K. It has aluminum wiring which is dangerous (they thought it was the next best thing in the late 60's). Our electrician says an average colonial has approx. 100 outlets/switches. That combined with how accessible the wires are through the walls/basement determine the price.

We upgraded our 2000 sq. ft. hi-ranch (built in 1962) from 100 amp to 200 amp and it cost us $1400. He had to put in new wiring to the outside pole, plus a new electrical box. It was one guy and it took him all day.

It should have been on your engineer's report. They used to advocate "pigtailing" the wires at the switches with copper for about $4000. The problem with pigtailing is it must be absolutely perfectly done. Whose to say that the electricians's assistants (who will do some of the work) will have every wire perfect. Some electricians also say that it's much better just to rewire. I thin they didn't start using aluminum until 1967 or 1968 so you might be safe.
DH's uncle is a retired insurance exec. He said to get the entire house rewired and be on the safe side that way we will have no issues with wiring for the next 30 plus years. I'd rather spend 10K and really know the job is done than 4K and still be nervous. He settled a lot of claims on houses that burned due to aluminum wiring... as the years go on fires are more likely in the walls.

That seems a good price. Just keep in mind it depends upon the size of your house, how many switches there are and how easily accessible it is. For example, a ranch with a complete unfinished basement is the easiest. Our electrician quoted us that price as the highest price. We are buying the house so he hasn't been able to get into it yet. We also have 4 bedrooms, a wrap around hallway upstairs, 2 full baths, LV, DR, EIK, large foyer, Den, .5 bath, laundry room, 1/2 basement and 2 car garage. Most likely he will have to chop up some walls because the Den and LR are on concrete slabs. My current house is much smaller and is a ranch so it would be much cheaper. We also have to get a new box and conduit.
