Question about paternity leave for Dads that are teachers?

For those of you whose husbands are teachers or those of you that are teachers and may know information about Paternity leave...

DH spoke to his school secretary about paternity leave and she said there is none. Could this really be true??? He has to use his sick days???

Nor is there maternity leave (paid) at public school districts. No such thing, as far as I know.

Every district that I'm familiar with requires you to use your sick days if you would like to get paid. Without pay, you can take Family Medical Leave Act and they will give you your benefits (again, no pay). I will be taking almost all of my sick days (I think I have 30 or so stored up over 3 years) and then FMLA for 12 weeks. I'll return after that is up at the start of the semester.

He would be better off looking at the UFT web site and/or calling the borough UFT office. It may be the same as it is for the women teachers, which involves using any sick days that are in the bank. Payroll secretaries, in my experience, often don't know all these little details.

The sick days we as woman use I believe is to "recover" from giving birth. So, I don't think he would be able to use his sick time. I believe he'd have to use the Family Medical Leave which is up to twelve weeks. The district where I work, you get six weeks of sick for V birth and 8 weeks for C-section paid. After that it is Family medical leave. You don't get paid and you have to pay the district for your benefits. So, whatever the amount you pay from your paycheck each month for benefits, you have to pay that to keep your benefits.

I believe Debbie is correct. I doubt you can use your sick days at all.

We do not pay into our benefits, so the benefits continue under FMLA without any kind of fee.

I agree with the rest of the ladies. I don't think he will be able to use anything. I don't think FMLA applies in his situation as isn't that for the actual "recovery" aspect of birth?

As for taking sick days - that policy probably varies by district. I doubt my district would allow it.

My husband is a teacher and he could take up to 2 weeks but they would be sick days. He took 3 days off.

Most places don't offer paternity leave. DH had to use vacation time and then FMLA to stay home with me.

Dads should be given some rights here...LOL DH may end up taking a week off and not getting paid. That stinks...

Another teacher at his school had to take a month leave of absence and didn't get paid for it either. I called UFT and they told me to call back at 4 p.m. to speak to a general rep. Which is what I will do...

I just called them and they said that it has to be the member that calls...errrrrrrrr!!! DH will have to call himself. I have to convince him to call cuz he is taking the work of the secretary. No offense to her but sometimes you have to do your own research.
