Reccommend an uplifting/happy book

I'm in a "sad" book rut. I read Night and Speak, Rwanda one after the other.

I need something happier- but nothing like The Devil Wears Prada or Shopaholic.

Suggestions? Chat Icon

Re: Reccommend an uplifting/happy book

It's an oldie, but I LOVE Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I was so happy at the end of the book. It's my all time fav.

Re: Reccommend an uplifting/happy book

When I've gone through a string of 'sad' books, I sometimes return to children's books like "The Little Prince" or "A Wrinkle in Time" to bring me up again.

As far as adult stories go, do you prefer fiction, non-fiction, classics....?

Can I tell you how much I love that you called me Snoz? Chat Icon

David Sedaris has a few books out (Dress Your Family in Couroroy and Denim; Me Talk Pretty One Day) - they are a compilation of short essays about his childhood. You might want to read an excerpt online before diving in.

This is fiction but Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth had me laughing, a little grossed and sort of shocked at times.

And if you wouldn't mind reading play, though it's meant to be seen, I never laughed so hard reading anything as I did reading "Laughter on the 23rd Floor" by Neil Simon.

Portnoy's Complaint
SYNOPSIS
This modern classic of the Jewish American experience centers around one Alexander Portnoy, who on the couch of his psychoanalyst, confesses everything from his adolescent preoccupation with masturbation to his subjugation by his dominating mother, Sophie.

My friend recommended it to me and when I read the synopsis, I was a little Chat Icon. But I laughed so hard at certain points that people actually asked me what I was reading.

This is one of my all time favorite books. My favorite part is the school Christmas play.

I second David Sedaris - my favorite so far of his is Me Talk Pretty One Day.

I also think Laurie Notaro is hilarious. I laugh out loud at her stuff.

I LOVE "A Prayer for Owen Meany!" I also enjoyed "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" by Chuck Klosterman, a funny analysis of pop culture.

Holes by Louis Sachar was so well-written and a fun read. It's for young adults (a novel) but I have recommended it to a lot of adults who loved it.

I tried Me Talk Pretty One Day, and it just wasn't working for me. I read a few pages of Marley and Me, and that looks like what I need. I have to look into Portnoy's Complaint, too. Chat Icon
