poking belly to stimulate baby movement

so i've seen my dr. do this before but my dh made me nervous now... the other day i was trying to get he/ she move by poking a bit with my finger when dh turned around and said not to do that since they're so fragile etc. etc.... like i said, my own dr. has done this when conducting a sono but now of course i feel i have something else to worry about! i mean not for ntohing but aren't they so well protected by the layers of skin, fat, and sac?
just looking for some peace of mind Chat Icon

Um, I do this ALL the time. I am pretty sure my little girl is fine. I always joke that I'm going ot give her shaken baby sydrome before she's even born. (godforbid!)

I don't think you can harm the baby that way.

Oooh - I'm glad I'm not the only one! Chat Icon While I understand the baby is fragile, if the doctor is pushing down on my stomach while doing a sono to stimulate movement, I don't think my little finger is doing any harm by getting the little guy / girl to jump around a bit! Thanks for easing my mind! Chat Icon

I do this all the time too. DH and I always joke that the baby is going to come out poking us, asking how we like it!! I really don't think it is a problem. Like you said, they are plenty protected.

I would do it all the time to get a response back from the belly.. That uterus and placenta are unbelieveable protectors for the lil ones so I wouldn't worry..

We do the same! Dh presses my belly and she pushes back. I move her feet out of my ribs all the time.

go poke joe's belly! you aren't going to hurt your baby!

If you want to see something crazy - esp when you are further along - shake a can of pennies at your belly - my dr did this because during a non stress test - it appeared he was sleeping and she wanted to be sure - so she woke him up - boy did my belly go crazy! I wouldn't recommed doing taht often - poor kid!
